New motherboard, move RAID 0 disks ?

Hi,

I have two 250gb disks raided (RAID 0/striping) on an Abit AN7 motherboard, which has an onboard RAID controller -

Sil 3112 (1.5gb/s)

I am now upgrading to an Abit AW9D-Max, which has the RAID controller

Sil 3132 (3.0gb/s)

Has anyone had experience of doing this ? i've read a lot about 'well, different manufacturers write RAID information in different formats etc, so it wouldn't work'. So i've seen lots of it shouldnt, wouldnt, but has anybody ACTUALLY had any success or failure in moving RAIDed disks ?

I'm going to test it with my new motherboard, making sure they're installed in the right order :) I'm fairly confident it shouldn't cause any problems on boot up, afterall it's only reading the disks ? ie if it doesnt work, i'll pop it back to it's original rig and then ponder on how the hell i'm going to back up 420 odd gb.

I'd be tempted to give it a go but only after I'd made sure I had a complete backup of everything on the array - which you should have anyway if you're running RAID0.

If you already boot off the RAID0 array then you might end up with other problems down the road if you get it working, I've always found that it's easier to do a full reinstall of windows if you change the board.

I do plan to do a complete reinstall of the OS, i just want it to recognise all the partitions and data. As long as it can correctly see the RAIDED disks on the new motherboard, i can then go ahead and blat the OS partition.

Otherwise, i need to go back to original rig and backup the data before creating new raided sets and reformatting on the new motherboard.

Huzzah !

The new motherboard recognised the RAIDed disks ! transplant operation complete.

The AW9D-Max has an Intel and Silicon Image RAID controller. I just made sure they were connected to the Silicon Image controller and also made sure they were connected in the same order (HDD A was connected to SATA1, HDD B was connected to SATA2 on old mobo, i had SATA5 and SATA6 on the new motherboard, so it was just a case of making sure HDD A -> SATA5, HDD B -> SATA6).

Windows blue-screened, but then no suprise there. I just blatted the OS partition and re-installed.

I can't believe how quiet the rig is ! wish i had a quiet DVD-Writer :(
