Getting a bit bored with my BMW 650 GS, which I have had for 2 years now which is a record for me

Anyway I fancy something a bit quicker but still reasonably comfy for everyday commuting.

Used to have a CBR600FS which I loved so have been looking at similar bikes, looking to spend around £2.5k for a 2000 model.

Found these 3 so far at a local shop

I personally would go with the CBR600, heard nothing but good news about them. Ive heard the new 1000's aint much cop and the old 900's are better. However why anyone would want much more than that on the road i dont know? :( Speed cameras suck

I wouldnt say speed cameras are the reason not to go for a larger bike, a 600 can get you in trouble quick enough, but its the usuability of the power. When im out with my mates, my mate on his VFR400 is usually the bike thats up at the front chasing the R1's. Obviously the motorways are a different story but who wants to ride along them all day.

Two reasons spring to mind
1. 600's aren't big enough if you're 6'2"
2. Thers plenty of roads without speed cameras

Exactly, a CBR900 is only really rideable fun on a long motorway road, on the twisties the 600 will keep up if not be quicker than a 900.. I heard that the 600 Motorbike racing classes running standard cut tyres are only like half a second slower than the superbikes on some courses? However i cannot confirm this.

My vote goes for the SRAD, had one for a couple of years and absolutely loved it. Complete nut case of a bike that can be pushed really hard but also be used for day to day commuting (used to do a daily 50 mile round trip on it).

Also think I may prefer its looks to all the newer models since, looks like a tank but goes like a rocket.

Only issue with them is it’s non injected so carb icing can be a problem in really cold weather but this can be got round but sticking a sock in the intake.

Try being 6'2" and riding a VFR400R then ;)
As long as im not stuck in the same position ie motorway riding then im fine, the moving round stops me cramping up.

I'd go for the CBR600. For the following reasons:

1. If you go for the F/FS then it's a lot bigger than the newer RR, and very comfy.
2. It's a Honda - so 100% reliable and build quality second to none.
3. It's more likely to survive British Weather for longer than other makes.
4. It's plenty fast enough for most situations.
5. Some subtle mods and a race can and it can look/sound the dogs...
6. I have one :D

:)

I'm not sure any bike is fun on a long motorway road at least not after the novelty of accelerating until your nereves or the rev limiter calls a halt to proceedings. I have immense fun on the twisties on my CBR900 and arguably I'm no faster round corners than a CBR600, but show me a straight and I'll be going round the next bend before the 600 gets there.

As for the OP, if you had a CBR before and you liked it then I'd go for another. The Fazer will likely dissapoint if you want extra performance.

I'd rule out the SRAD, they don't age too well generally. I reckon I'd look at the CBRs, they're great road bikes- reliable, well built, and reasonably pokey too. Not up to cutting edge standards, but not drastically far off- you still see plenty at trackdays making monkeys of brand new sports tackle. I'm not a litre bike fan to be fair, they don't push my buttons, but an older blade's a great buy as well.

Oh aye, I'd take a look at the faired Hornet... Not everyone's choice but I reckon they're brilliant buys.

R6 4TW although its not one of you options and I havn't read the thread fully so apologise if its not what your after.

If not then I suppose it has to be the CBR, although I just find them dull (no offence meant lukechad) dull to look at and compared to the R6 and GSXR K1 dull to ride. People may say I'm biased, but the 99-02 R6 is a completely different beast entirely to mine, and not really very similar at all apart from the name. no parts are the same I dont think.

You should be able to find a GSXR600 K1 in budget (my mate is selling one for £2500 at the moment) which are a stonking bike. Neither are uncomfortable particularly either, if you want comfort buy a car, I really dont think thats what bikes are for, my R6 has never given me any complaints or aches apart from the inevitable wrist, but thats not too bad, and I'm sure its smaller than any of the bike mentioned here.

Well I got a '99 CBR 600 F-X in the end.

Picked her up tonight after work and had to go for a quick blast, great fun handles like a dream and very very fast compared to my BMW :D

She looks just like this one but it is fitted with a black screen & Micron race can & screams very loud:

Good choice

Does the micron can have a removeable baffle? I put my Micron can back on at the weekend and decided to try it without the baffle. OMG! it sounded fantastic. Problem is I'd get pulled even feathering the throttle near a Police car so it just remained a garage experiment. It will be coming out when I take it over the TT next year though :)

I've had my Micron Carbon Race Can fitted to my CBR for over 12 months and never been pulled - although I am not looking foward to putting the original can back on in March when it goes for it's first MOT :(

Nice choice Euro_Hunter - always liked that colour scheme. May I suggest you sign up to http://www.cbr-forum.org.uk/ - loads of VERY useful help and advice on maintenance, mods, and basically all things CBR related on there.... :)

With no baffle? Mine sounds acceptably loud with the baffle (and passed it MOT with it on) but theres no way I'd get away with the decibels with the baffles removed.
