New Mountain Bike Advice

Yeah it is but it's completely sold out now :(

They do have one Cube LTD Race left in black and my size.

And the 2010 Trek 6500 isn't available from evans until October.

Looks like I'm down to 2 bikes unless my visit to yet another bike shop after work finds me something else. Comparing the specs of the 2 there are (to me) pluses and minuses for both bikes. Overall I can't pick a winner!

Any help here? I need some expert help :D

Well I didn't find anything at the bike shop I went to after work.

Cube better specced? Ok, next question.

Which bike would (in your opinion) be easier (and cheaper) to upgrade? I'm not thinking straight away but within the next 6 months. What you swap out??

I'd go with the cube. Nicer easton finishing kit, brakes, chainset and forks I'd say.

I don't understand what you mean by easier to upgrade? The wheels are the only thing I prefer on the focus over the cube.

The guys at freeflow bikes are quite cool aswell, quite a few people I know use them. Craig or Neil is actually my bosses neighbour afaik.

Well what I mean is say swapping out the brakes on one of these vs swapping out the wheels etc on the other, if that makes sense?

It seems you answered the question anyway as most of the Cube's spec is better. Ok so aside from the wheels, is there anything else you would swap out on the Cube to make it better?

Also, is the SLX stuff generally considered better than XT? I thought is was the other way around

XT is higher performance, in this case, lighter. However, it's not that much lighter and SLX is a lot stiffer/stronger. But XT isnt exactly made of cheese, so it's a trade-off.

My mental breakdown of the specs:

Frame: Cube
Fork: Cube
Wheels:Focus
Tyres: Cube
Cassette: Equal
Crankset: Focus
Shift Levers: Cube
R Derailleur: Cube
F Derailleur: Focus
Chain: Equal
Brakes: Cube
Stem: Cube
Handlebars: Cube
Saddle: Unknown
Seat Post: Cube

you wont need to swap much on the Cube, Formula brakes are some of the best you can get plus its got a nice finishing off spec using Easton components and SLX.

The hubs are also sun ringle some nice detail shots here it will be a cracking bike!
LTD Race

They are roughly the same, the xt will be lighter(by 40g) but seems to be a lot more expensive than SLX. I'd rather have SLX for the looks and strength.

I ride shimano brakes and have never ridden formula brakes, I've heard very good things about them though!

Ok thanks guys.

I'll be trying to get an order the Cube in the next day or 2 hopefully, though there is only 1 left as I spoke to them this afternoon.

I'm hoping to. I rang them earlier and whilst there was a problem with the language barrier (:p) they seemed decent and said the bike would be shipped same day if ordered before 3pm and delivered next day. Whether they sell it this week before I get chance to get it who knows, I'm hoping they don't

Just a shame you're so far away as you'll have to take it to some other shop to get its first check and if anything goes wrong it can be a pain in the arse. I do hope your more lucky with this after the carrera problems. Did you get it fixed in the end?

Yes it got fixed, just came back with it now and the creaking was as I suspected the bottom bracket which has also been replaced, the bike runs very smoothly now. 3 weeks without a bike has been annoying to say the least.

I have Samways (ukcyclestore) literally 5 mins walk away who have their own workshop so I can always take it there for a check. If I didn't feel confident enough to check it myself I wouldn't mind paying the for peace of mind.

That's where halfords fails. 3 weeks without a bike is shocking. In our shop we usually turn around faults that day or if we have to order bits they get to take the shop rockhopper or cheap roadbike until they get their bike back! Glad you got it sorted in the end.

I'm TOTALLY NOT JEALOUS that you'll be getting that cube as I totally don't want one in black :(

Well it went in twice in those 3 weeks and they had to order the parts in. Yes it was slow but it i working well again thankfully. How long for, who knows?! :D

I can't tell if you do or don't want a black Cube? :D I actually prefer the blue and white one, no bugger has them in my size now though! :(

I actually wanted a bike with more white on it, why I don't know, bling factor maybe...

I do very much want a black one! White is rather pimp but I'm not sure if it's just a phase at the minute. I prefer stealthy things, especially if they are gonna end up mucky as hell.
