New mouse mat

I've seen comments about washing mouse pads, is it generally safe to wash them regardless of make?

Has anyone else found that the OCUK mats fade quite a lot?

Mine is quite an old one, but had been left unopened in its box for years (I got a spare) and was nice and black when i took it out, but after two months of sunlight it's gone purply
