As some may be aware Asustor (Asus subsidiary) has entered the nas market with their 6 series of nas enclosures.

I've been reviewing a unit for them, the AS-602T a two bay unit, and I thought I would post up here as it may be of interest to you good folk. My review is HERE

I can see this being a true competitor for qnap/synology and the unit is very polished and I really liked their ADM interface which is great considering it's effectively a first gen product.

The only thing missing which I hope they change real soon are dedicated mobile apps for music/photo/surveillance.

Anyway, let me know what you think. Really appreciate feedback.

Looks very nice and a good review. Need to see some prices to see how it will stack up to the other players

Looks good mate, shame they ain't as well established as the other two competitors as yet, so they'll have a fair bit to learn.

Best bit of advice I can give them is to ensure its always up to date as allot of people complain of the other two companies not doing enough to ensure the latest revisions of the linux components are updated to the latest versions ;)

oh and whilst the HDMI port is a good idea (to use as a HTPC) - it will probably need more grunt than just an Atom processor to handle 1080p stuff properly. I know for a fact it will struggle encoding 1080p stuff in plex media server (recommendation is a core 2 duo with at least 2Ghz for 1080p) for mobile devices just like all the other NAS boxes out there ;)

I agree. With the hdmi port though the boxee app has native support so it's just playback which in fairness it handles very well. I agree though that the D2700 Atom chip struggles a bit with transcoding the larger 1080p stuff.

Hopefully the new Intel Atom 5315 SoC will resolve that and most the major players are planning nas enclsures with it.

Just to give you guys some idea, all my movies are 720p .mkv and the plex server on this works a charm. Transcoded all my movies to the ipad fine. Really like this unit.

Edit: Looking forward to hopefully seeing something from them to compete with the Synology DS212j!
