New Nikon DSLR... Soon

Hmm, sensor from a D200 with the price of a D70 = lots of ****** off D200 owners, myself included!!!

The D200 is fairly close to the D2X in many respects, lets hope they dont make this new D80? or whatever it is too close to the D200!!!

Surely a camera that gives no noise at all would be perfect?

It would give more control the the photographer, you take the photo then add what ever type of noise you want in PS.

In theory yes. But people have only really had problems with noise since cameras went digital. Noise hasn't been an issue for photographers during the 80-100 odd years that people have been taking photos. I prefer a real Lomo camera to the fake lomo action in PS because the results are real. They're based on the way the camera interpreted the light at that time. The same for noise. Adding noise in PS creates a fake layer of noise above the image rather than a nice film like grain based on the light at the time of the photo. I would love to have a noise free camera for some shots but then a noisy one for others. Hmmm I think I just sold myself a 5D there ;) 5D for noise free, 10D for noisy. But anyway, I think people need to realise that noise isn't bad.

Doesn't really matter if it uses the D200 sensor, nobody bought the D200 for the resolution. It'll be interesting whether it gets the same AF module as the D200 and the same image processing system (stolen from a D2X). To be honest the D70s has been around a little bit but there's not much to add to it, a higher resolution sensor would be a nice upgrade on paper but not worth upgrading for. They might give it a battery grip i suppose...

Nobody has been speculating on full frame (which is just about possible) but it seems unlikely as some of Nikons best glass is DX format (17-55 f2.8 springs to mind). Still just possible, and a full frame D200 is the big missing item in the nikon range.

EDIt: I just looked at the nikon teaser thing, no indication of full frame....

Chances of full frame are very very small indeed imo. Nikon have said they are committed to the DX sensor. :)

yeah, i always realised that and I don't want it anyway. for the extra that a full frame camera would cost just buy the 12-24 and there's no need for full frame. It'l be interesting to see what it is though.

The nikon trialer says it uses the 10.2 megapixel sensor so its definatly DX based, and yes i bought the D200 for its sensor amongst other features so i'll be upset if that appears in a much cheaper body!

It's bound to have other features from the D200 cut out. The viewfinder in the D200 is one of the best in a sub Pro camera so the one in D80 will probably not be as good, 3 FPS, cheaper build etc

Not being a Nikon user but i read in another photo forum that the sensor in the Sony A100 is not the same as the sensor in the D200 ?

If true it makes more sense that the D80 would not share the D200 sensor.

Hmm, so it's gonna essentially be a D70s with a 10.2MP sensor, slightly better noise reduction at high ISO, possibly slighty better AF, and a better hisogram. Fps won't go up, it won't have a vertical grip, and it won't feel more "serious" because that would encroach on D200 territory.

I purchased the D200 thinking it would be a significant upgrade from the D70s, but found the images to be almost identical. Yeah the D200 is a higher resolution but the sharpness when you zoom in really isn't very superior. The sensor is almost identical and the resulting images are almost equally sharp. Resolution makes the picture bigger at 100% zoom, not noticably clearer. Yes there is a slight difference side by side with identical photos, but do a blind test on an 18x24 print of different photos and you'll find it very hard to tell the difference. They both look good.

It's like comparing a 10MP compact digital to a 6MP DSLR. The 6MP DSLR wipes the floor with it because of the size of the sensor and sharpness of the image. The D70s and it's so called replacement will have an almost identical sensor. Resolution means very little.

I ended up sending my D200 back because I couldn't justify it. Plus it's an unforgiving dog comapred to the D70s. Infact the ONLY noticable difference in picture quality between the D70s and D200 was that the noise on high ISO settings was a bit better. But the few times I ever want to use ISO1600 arn't worth £1200 to me.

Can't get excited about something that is gonna sit below the D200 in the food chain, so it won't even have the build quality advantage. It's gonna be a D70 to D70s upgrade again. A damn good camera, but not worth an upgrade.
