Since it was annouced a good while back that they were working on a new version I thought I'd start a thread and include any updates:

MacRumors:

Microsoft today announced a sneak preview of Office for Mac 2011, set for release later this year. The preview, scheduled in conjunction with Macworld Expo in San Francisco, details several significant changes including the adoption of a "ribbon" interface similar to that introduced for Windows in Office 2007.

We took your feedback and haven't completely rearranged what you know and love: the new design is an evolution of the Office 2008 Elements Gallery and uses the classic Mac menu and Standard Toolbar giving you the best of both worlds. You can even collapse the ribbon and the Toolbar for more screen space or for the more advanced users who rely on keyboard shortcuts. Together these tools make it easy to find and discover new and frequently used commands.

Also included are new co-authoring tools and integration with Office Web Apps to foster collaboration and easy file access from anywhere.

Another major change highlighted by Microsoft is the replacement of Entourage with Outlook for Mac. As previously detailed, Outlook for Mac will be Cocoa-based and will leverage the Exchange Web Services platform to enhance productivity, particularly in enterprise settings. Newly-announced today is the capability of Outlook for Mac to import .PST storage table files from Outlook for Windows.

Pricing for Office for Mac 2011, which has been expected to ship in the "holiday season 2010", has yet to be announced

Again MacRumors:

Boy Genius Report reports that it has received a gallery of screenshots showing off early versions of Microsoft's Office for Mac 2011 productivity suite, scheduled for launch later this year.
We've just scored some of the first shots of Microsoft Office 2011 for Mac, and while they are said to be very early, you can clearly see the progress that has been made in the transition to native Cocoa applications.

The set of seven screenshots shows off Word, Excel and PowerPoint, as well as Outlook, which will replace Entourage as the e-mail and calendaring component of Office for Mac. The shots also demonstrate how the "ribbon" toolbar display that first appeared in the primary applications of Office 2007 for Windows to mixed reviews will be implemented for Mac.

....and finally Mactopia's press release

All very interesting, obviously trying to uniform it with the current Office look/feel of it. Plus replacing Entourage with Outlook, but I never understood why they named it Entourage in the first place?

NOT that I use Office much, I probably use iWorks more, but then again thats probably the mac fanboi in me. :o

Don't suppose those of us with Office 2008 will get a cheap update? And any chance it'll actually work faster and not slow things to a crawl?

I hate judging on beta screenshots, but that interface sucks.

Why they can't make Office 2010 look and work like Office 2007 is sad. That's why I gave up on 2008.. it felt like a step backwards, and having to re-learn the menus got old. Fast.

Doesn't help switchers either.

I'm pleased that Outlook will finally make it to the Mac but I've got my head around mail.app now and I can't see myself changing.

Assuming it actually uses exchange sync properly and not with the web connectors like mail.app and entourage do, then I'll be forcing all our mac users to have outlook.

BOOM.

Blast from the past, Office For Mac 2011 was released today.

From MacRumors:

Microsoft today announced that Office for Mac 2011 is now officially available, offering consumers a number of new features in the company's flagship productivity suite.

According to Wilfrid, three-quarters of all Mac users have Office installed on their machines. "That's the vast majority of Mac customers counting on Microsoft for a critical piece of their computing needs," he says. "Mac users need Office because it helps them work with the Windows world."
Wilfrid is proud of that statistic, which he says highlights the importance of the relationship between the two companies.

Today the relationship takes another step forward as Microsoft releases Office for Mac 2011, the company's productivity software suite tailored for the Mac operating system. Mac users can now install the latest versions of Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and, for the first time, Outlook.

Office 2011 is available in 13 languages around the world, and by November the suite will be available in more than 45 countries.

Microsoft's Office for Mac site offers a tour of the new suite, as well as highlights of the changes included. One of the most significant changes is the replacement of Entourage with Outlook for managing email, calendars, and contacts. Outlook is included with Home & Business versions of Office 2011.

With today's launch, Amazon is offering significant discounts on Office for Mac 2011 packages:

- Microsoft Office for Mac Home and Student 2011 - Single License £75 @ Amazon.

What's also quite cool is it's on Technet ;)

First time for a major Mac OS. Kind of shows that the Mac BU is getting more attention now.

No upgrade options for those who have had Office 2008 for a while.
Doesn't really affect me personally, just need to wait for it to appear on the Home Use Program.

Downloaded my copy yesterday from the upgrade program - bought Office 2008 when a certain online retailer had it for about £60 and now have a 3 licence copy of Office 2011 Home & Student :)

It's a massive improvement over 2008...

If it's on technet I might give it a whirl. 75% of Mac users have Office installed though? Seems quite high to me that, particularly in light of some of the stick it gets.

I've been using it for a while and the performance on a Mac Pro with a 5 worksheets and 10 graphs is god awful.

It takes a few seconds for things to happen if I want to change a chart title or something.

Or rending graphs, it pauses, then does it.

This isn't difficult MS, why can't you test things properly!?

Installed this last night (recently bought the previous version on offer, which came with a free downloadable version of 2011 on release).

Since installing I'm having font issues in mail.app - loads of emails full of question marks. Anyone else had this issue?
