Good Evening Everyone,

I am after some help with what to put in my new shuttle 'office' system.

To give you a very brief background - I am about to move office at the end of this month and therefore am going to loose the computers that we are currently using as they belong to the current office we are at.

Therefore I am going to be buying two identical systems to replace the two we are loosing. The reason I want to go for a shuttle is because it saves space, is quiet and far easier to move around if we need to.

The final system needs to be:

- An office based computer - hence can run all the normal office programmes with ease and can bootup/shutdown nice and quickly
- Can handle the occasional DV Editing - Adobe Premiere Pro.....
- Will handle Adobe GoLive for updating websites

The system will not be used for gaming.

BUDGET - £400 est.

I would usually want a pentium chip as they are quieter but would still consider an AMD!

If you want to talk me out of getting a shuttle system then feel free as long as there is an alternative space saving solution. I also looked into the MAC Mini but want a PC based system. (yet we do editing on a G5 Quad and Mac Book Pro, I prefer PC for office work)

Thank you for anyone who offers any suggestions!

Chris

p.s I have looked at previous spec systems but no one has mentioned a similar budget, and most specs posted are for gaming systems!

hi CuT i would go for Shuttle XPC SK21G and use AMD Sempron 64 2800+ 1.6GHz

im sure that would be enuff power for a office pc. there very quiet as well i built 1 the other day for a friend and i was well happy with it. and i couldnt beleave how queit it ran

this is the list of hardware i used in the build

Shuttle XPC SK21G = £126.84
AMD Sempron 64 2800+ 1.6GHz = £46.94
GeIL 1GB (2x512MB) PC3200 Value = £73.97
Western Digital Caviar Special Edition 160GB = £44.59
Sony DWG120A 16x16 DVD±RW (Silver) = £26.97
OcUK Value Floppy Drive - Silver = £6.99

you will also need to buy a IDE cable if you using a IDE harddriver . the shuttle only comes with 1 single ide cable, and the shuttle only as 1 ide slot so you will need a dual ide cable. some think like a Akasa Rounded Ultra ATA133/100/66 IDE Cable (0.45m) will only cost you £3.47

im sure you will be very happy with this build

total cost = £329.87

i reckon you'd be better off with a bog standard flat ide cable tbh if you had an ide drive. the rounded ones may save room and improve airflow in atx cases but in shuttles and other sff they just generally get in the way.

to be honest you're not going to get a shuttle branded unit for £400 without some setbacks unless you can find some good second hand units, what i would look into is an aria unit with a mATX motherboard, P4 dual core and everything on board. i'm not up to date on systems which use ddr2 therefore i'm not going to spec a system, also i'm not sure if the new aria can power a dual core. if you're looking at small units it might be the best way to go, but going SFF will be costly if the aria is not suitable.

edit: the 2 above posts were not here when i started typing lol.

a rounded akasa cable is not recommended, i bought one for use in a shuttle and struggled so much. the cables are thick and hard to move about in the tight spaces

yea i would use a flat ide cable, thats what i used on me m8s build but i couldnt find 1 on oc site :(

but for the build its self. will be more than enuff power for any office use
and its all under the price you are looking for

2x1gig of memory might be a better option as well but that will cost you more
