New or Used

I would have a test ride if you can,but choose the bike that fits you best

triumphs are expensive, even more so over the jap bikes

So I'm pretty much on the verge of being decided I want a street triple. I think I need to do another test ride to make my mind up.

Supposing I finally get the balls to stick a deposit on the bike. I could go new, or I could go used. There's not really a whole lot in it. Monthly's will be the same more or less the only difference is that at the end of 3 years with new there'll be the RV. Which if the market stays strong (questionable) means just swapping for a new bike and then rinse and repeat until I get old. Used means ownership at the end of three years and every second spent keeping it means less value for a future trade in.

Perhaps it comes down to money, perhaps it comes down to whether I want to keep it forever.

That's my situation, but how did you lot choose the route you went down. Perhaps your reasonings will help me figure out what I want to do.

I would go new if you can afford it.

So much nicer to start fresh, not a scratch on it, build your own little history with the bike and maintain it in your own way from day one :D

Yeah you'll lose money as soon as you put the first mile on it, but who really cares? If you love biking, get the bike you want and don't worry about the cost. If you're using the thing purely as a commuting tool then you can worry about depreciation etc. but if it's your hobby and your fun, does it really matter what it costs?

Street Triples are awesome little bikes, lots of fun, especially when it's the dealer's test model (ahem :p).

Just buy a 6 month old one, it will be in immaculate "as new" condition without the painful first service cost and a lot cheaper as some other mug takes the hit on it.

Only buy new if it's a brand new model and you have to have it now.

No. Just make sure you have AA/RAC membership up to date :p

The previous one you quoted, the Street Triple R. Exact same conundrum I had this time last year.

Found a second hand one, just under a year old, less than 2,000 miles £6800. I wanted all the add ons for it, belly pan, tail tidy, headlight fairing, quickshift and arrow exhaust etc, added all that lot up and total price came to £8300 plus fitting or... buy brand new one for £8179 with all those parts fitted, would've been a mug to buy second hand so that's where my smart money went ;)

If you chop and change your bikes regular then buying new makes no sense, you'll constantly lose out. But if you're planning on buying new and keeping for as long as you can envisage then why not?

I've bought plenty of second and new bikes over the years to understand there are advantages and disadvantages to both. Just go with what you want, life's too short (that old chestnut).
