New pc arrived but it has problems, please help me!

I am guessing one of the wireless adapters is the onboard networking with the motherboard.

Thanks everyone.

I phoned up the company that built it and told them my problems with the wireless adaptor.

We established I infact only have one adaptor in my system. I saw two antennas at the back of the base unit and two items listed under "network adaptor" in device manager and incorrectly assumed there were two wireless receivers in there!

They gave me a long sequence of instructions to follow which I wrote down and followed exactly but it ended up with my pc now frozen and unusable. I rung them back and now they have emailed me more instructions to follow to reverse what they told me previously and more driver stuff.

They tell me they have had other complaints with that device and will send me out a new one tomorrow to put in myself if it continues. So if my pc gets back to normal I can't say fairer than that.

as far as breaking a computer goes physically its quite hard to do as long as you dont force things. if something is ment to go in to that slot it will fit there with only a tiny bit of pushing, dont force anything and you will be fine...

i would suggest you first confirm that you have got 2 wireless network cards in you pc (anyone on the forums could tell you if you take a pic of the inside of the pc). if you have take one out. its easy to do just unscrew the screw holding it down (inside the pc on the back wall see image only remove the screw above the card you want to take out not the blanking plate). and it then just pulls up and away from the motherboard (big flat board with everything sticking up from it).

Thanks. I've just heard about you have to wear an anti-static band when fiddling around inside the machine and I don't have one. Also when I have a machine that I spent a lot of money on I am hesitant to just tear it open and start pulling things out, but I will give it a go if they send me a new card. :)

It's always good practice to use an anti-static band but I've built a fair few systems and never used one. Just touch something like a radiator to get rid of the static, it's what I've always done.

Good luck

Great. The wireless card is unusable now. Numerous phone calls and I have been told to uninstall everything in safe mode which stops the freezing in normal mode and then when i update the drivers using the files they give me it freezes again. So I guess they will have to send me a new card...

Subliminal i updated the drivers myself first but that didn't work.

Get a bigger one from a mate or something and plug it in, connect to the intertubes and update your wireless adapter drivers, I had to do this on my PC when I reformatted. You could also download the drivers onto your dell laptop, put them on Memory Stick and connect instead of the other option. I'm sorry if this has already been said. :)

with regards to anti-static it shouldnt be a problem as long as you dont walk up and down a shag pile carpet with plastic shoes on... like said before just be careful to ground your self first so you dont have any static charge left on you...

pci cards are really easy to install/take out you will be ok.

as for the company who built the pc it seems like there a bunch of cowboys. i would suggest you buy from a different place next time, OcUK is really good for tech help, if anything goes wrong or you buy the wrong thing they accept RMA (returns) and will be happy to give you some technical help.

if you type the instructions they gave you someone might be able to see what they are trying to get you to do and help out with that...

Yeah I am thinking i might have to do that and get a bigger cable - gonna be a few days until I get a new card.

As for the drivers I tried getting them from the website using my dell and put them on a memory stick, the company i got the pc sent me drivers to try, i tried the drivers that came on the pc etc, and every time my pc freezes. I honestly think it's a dodgy card or something - first it was barely picking up the wireless signal (when my old laptop could get max) and now this.

Cool. That's reassuring to know. I'm starting to wonder if I shoulda just built the damn thing myself lol, the whole reason I got it prebuilt was to save me faffing around putting bits in and out of the box and to minimise the risk of things going wrong. But hey-ho it's here now, and I have to say apart from the wireless thing now it's first class, massive improvement over my laptop.

The instructions they gave me were to uninstall the adaptor from the device manager deleting all the driver software then reinstall with the new driver software. It seemed a lot more complicated than that the first time but now I have done it a few times now I realised that is all I have been doing.

Causes my system to freeze every time even when i reboot etc nothing will move so I have to restart in safe mode and re-uninstall the adaptor card and delete the driver software and that allows my computer to run normally, but without any card installed.
