new pc build, some first time start up problems

OK first of all check the packaging for the memory or the chip labelling itself should advise - for example it might say 2.1-2.3V. This is the correct tolerance your RAM is designed to work. You need to go into bios and find the option where you can change voltages / timings depends on the mobo and bios as to where it is but on my ASUS it's jumperfree settings option. You might (at a guess) find it is defaulting to 1.8v which might be cause of your problems (mine undervolts on auto and I had to manually set to 2.1v) Have a look around the BIOS to find where this is or read your mobo manual it should tell you. Make the change and put all other memory timing on auto spd for now (so it uses manufacturer settings preprogrammed on the modules themselves) Let me know how you get on....

Let's hope that works - make sure everything else (memory timings) is set to auto SPD too. Good luck and keep us informed.

nope hasnt fixed it :( it takes longer now to get past the 39 minutes to go stage of the xp install, but it still reboots at the 34 minutes devices installing progress bar.

theres a slightly odd noise right before it reboots, like a faint clicking? but its only faint and it only happens right before the reboot.

tried with another graphics card just to rule that out, and it made no difference.

this has really perplexed me, it seems to me like it must be something quite minor thats not set right or surely there would be masses of beeping, or refusing to boot up at all.

or one of the components is defective but i dont have a stock of parts i can switch out to see

What hard drive are you using ata 100 133 ? there are bugs in xp with anything earlier than 133 HD's unless its super patch 3 install.

Dont think its your card, by rights it shouldn't load any way until you install the the drivers for it....by rights its should be loading on the generic card from Mobo.....Have you tried another DVD player, may be its this at fault and not the PC....

You say faint clicking sound - hard drives usually make this sort of noise just before they pack up - have you enabled SMART in the bios - this should forewarn you of any impending doom if it is the HD...

Just another thought aswell - how is your SATA channel set in the bios - is it IDE or AHCI? If it was AHCI and your HD is not compatible then this could also be an issue so try IDE instead if you need to ...

And a quick google suggests driver issue. What hardware are you using?

Intel Core i7 920 D0 Stepping (SLBEJ) 2.66Ghz (Nehalem) (Socket LGA1366) - Retail
Gigabyte GA-EX58-UD3R Intel X58 (Socket 1366) PCI-Express DDR3 Motherboard
Patriot Viper 6GB (3x2GB) DDR3 PC3-12800 (1600MHz) Low Latency Tri-Channel (PVT36G1600LLK)
Sapphire ATI Radeon HD 4890 1GB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card
Hiper 580W HPU-4M580 SLi Certified ATX2.2 Power Supply

the hard drives, one is a 250gb maxtor and ones a 640gb western digital.

Ive tried it again with different SATA cables and the SATA settings in the BIOS are correct to what youve said, and its still no different.

Hmm It's really difficult to diagnose what is going wrong - have you had a thorough look at your bios to ensure everything is set ok - I know you corrected the memory voltage as per my earlier advice but have you looked at other factors for example, the processor core voltage / settings etc? It might be something really simple that you might have overlooked. I know you say this is your first build so not wanting to patronise or anything but is everything connected from psu to mobo properly and also, you have connected psu to gfx card and is the processor fan connected to the mobo? I'm having issues at the mo where I need to get 24 pin convertor as my psu only has 20 pin and I'm aware (correct me If I'm wrong) that the extra four I'm missing serve power to the PCIE slots. Just check these things - it's a long shot but like I say could be something really simple...

ive checked and double checked all the connectors, im sure everything is properly together to the best of my knowledge. all the fans spin up too on the cpu, graphics card and the case fans.

the 24pin power connector on the mobo was a bit of a weird one too, my psu has a 20 pin and a seperate 4 pin that comes from the same wiring bundle and conforms to the shape of the final 4 slots on the motherboard. so i plugged it in there, i assume thats the right thing to do?

i havnt looked at the processor voltage and settings as i dont know what im looking for really, never overclocked so never messed with that kinda stuff before.

thanks for trying to help me out with this, dont worry about patronizing me i have a feeling that this is something quite simple that ive missed somehow due to it being my first build. i just dont know what :(

What you did with the 20/24 pin plug is correct.

Does the motheroard have on board graphics? If so load without the GPU. Oherwise can you get your hands on a spare?

These things are always really frustrating because it is trial and error. Strip your build back to bare necessities and build up slowly.

My first post, hopefully a good one :b

slipstream the sata drivers onto the windows installation disk, it should stop BSOD'ing you when trying to reinstall

i dont get a BSOD it just reboots and i dont know how that slipstream thing works :(

the mobo doesnt have onboard graphics, but i do have an old gfx card which i tried and it was the same thing as with this one.

try resetting bios to failsafe settings then reboot and see what happens......dont forget to put the correct voltage and running speed on the memory before trying to install windows....
