hey guys, i've been looking around the ocuk site for some components to build my new gaming pc. However i've become really clueless as to what is the best motherboard / pci express card to get is. I know that i want the AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core 5600+. I've got a case and hard drives + dvd drives etc so all i really need some advice on is the motherboard, gfx card, psu and some ram. My budget is around £900-950. Any and all suggestions are appriciated.

Thanks

any reason as to why you want a amd? intel's are a lot better nowadays although assuming youre not going to overclock i doubt you'll notice the difference...

i cant do cool looking links like stinka :( but here goes.

Gigabyte GA_965P_DS3 : £82.24
BFG 8800GTX OC : £370.11
Intel C2D E6700: £206.79
Crucial Ballistix 2GB PC2-8500 : £117.49
Corsair HX620: £99.86
Total incl. VAT : £876.49

that is assuming you dont oc...if you do then get a e6600 and a tuniq or noctua and just leave everything else the same

or

you can get an sli system

same system as above except:

2x BFG 8800GTS 320Mb OC : £380.68

Can I just say. First time I built a proper system with a proper budget I ignored the advice from here, and I have regretted it ever since.

That is a very awsome system and will overclock like you would not beleive.

Core 2 Duo > AMD 64 from personal experience by more than double the benchmark scores.

what case have you got becrazed? maybe you could do with a new one if its something not that good your budget would certainly allow for a decent case..

Just to add to that, will need to know which case you have because not all cases can accommodate the 8800GTX which is within budget & possibly the HSF most here are recommending :)

my mates just bought a new system with 4gb of ram, is it worth spending more for an extra 2gb or is it not worth it in terms of the differenece.

unless youll be using vista i dont think youll see a huge boost in performance..if your are using vista then you could get 4gb since it hogs so much memory..

also one other thing, how much difference would a slightly more powerfull psu make, is it worth spending a little bit more for maybe an 800w one ?

The Corsair HX 620W is equal if not better than most PSU below 1000Ws. Its been shown to run a SLi system with several hard disks.

For PSU don't concentrate to much on wattage, but Amps on the Rails more specifically +12v Rail/s ;)

so it should be ok with 2 HD's and a dvd drive aswell as all the other components above?

yes mate it will be fine

my first choice of mobo (if you dont want to shell out on the evga 680i) would be :
Asus P5N-E SLi nForce 650

followed by the:

Gigabyte GA_965P_DS3P

the asus supporting sli nvidia which if your going for an 8800 gtx might be of use down the line

both boards overclock well and ive now douubt you could get an e6600 well over 3.2 ghz mabey 3.5-3.6 with some nice crucial ram, and a decent cooler like any mentioned in this thread

no ones mentioned the bargain that is the Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro i use one of these and my e6300 has sat @ 3.15 for 7 months now around 57 c max load
