New PC for making music.

I have an old PC and it’s time to upgrade, It’s had it.

The only bits I would like to keep would be the m-audio 1010 pci, Nvidia 6800 (?) GT pci/sli and my sata hdd’s.

I use the computer for making music only, not games. I was looking at the bundles but I am so out of the loop I dunno what to go for anymore!

With the above in mind I guess I am looking for a new mobo, memory, cpu and psu? Whats going to give me the best performance without having to spend shedloads. Are the bundles any good for my needs?

I am not looking for the best on the market but something that is going to run the latest music DAWs on Windows 7 without a problem.

Would really appreciated some suggestions.

I am not with the computer right now but I think it is PCI-E. I seem to remember the "E" stands for express? an old card now I know.

So PCI slots are being phased out of mobo's?!

PCI Express

your cards are pci express but I'd bin them anyway, they're nearly 8 years old, even onboard graphics would be better!

wait: if its the 6800 then its Pci E , but if its the 6600 then its AGP, can you give us the exact model?

It's the 6800 gt pci xpress! I would like to keep the sound card, surly this is still better than onboard audio?!

Is it worth going for one of the bundles or should I try and pick the parts?

An AMD Llano system, 4 core, 3 PCI slots, full ATX size, 4Gb DDR3, built in graphics.

Others may have different ideas.

cool thanks!

I was actually swaying towards this. Your suggestion is a lot cheaper tho!

That is an ITX board with no PCI slot. What size case do you have?

The intel i5-2500K is the mainstream CPU and cannot be bettered currently for overall performance. It may be expensive for what you need. You would need either to use your current graphics card or buy another.

The Llano has the best onboard graphics HD6000 series AMD.

There is a huge choice of variables, what is your preferred budget.

I would like to do it as cheap as possible without being so tight the system will suffer and fall apart.

As you will not be gaming, I do not think that you need the i5-2500k, nor do you need high end graphics.

I would propose on the intel side you look at the i3-2100 in an Asus P8H67-M PRO this would cost about £200 and with the PSU and ram above about £260. Will give you a PCI slot.

I think though that the Llano is cost effective for you and it is a quad core rather than the i3 dual core.

The motherboard size depends on your case though and whether it will take an ATX or mATX board?

yeh I like your Llana idea!

I will also be needing to buy a new case, suggestions?

No, some confusion here, i thought that the latest suggestion was based on your current motherboard.

Llano is socket FM1
Phenom is socket AM3
Intel i3 or i5 is socket 1155

They are not interchangeable, I think that your choice is either i3/i5 or Llano really.

I get you.

I think your Llano choice is the best options then for me really? would I get much more power from the Phenom 2 x4 quad core over the Llano cpu? if it only costs a little bit more but gives me more bang for my buck then I would go for it.
