Anyone else building a new PC just for Shogun 2 (total war series)?
Cause I am.

Minimum Specs (Required for playing Total War: Shogun 2):

* 2 GHz Intel Dual Core processor / 2.6 GHz Intel Single Core processor , or AMD equivalent (with SSE2)
* 1GB RAM (XP), 2GB RAM (Vista / Windows7)
* 256 MB DirectX 9.0c compatible graphics card (shader model 3)
* 1024x768 minimum screen resolution
* 20GB free hard disk space

Recommended Specs (Recommended for optimum game play of Total War: Shogun 2):

* 2nd Generation Intel Core i5 processor (or greater), or AMD equivalent
* 2GB RAM (XP), 4GB RAM (Vista / Windows7)
* AMD Radeon HD 5000 and 6000 series graphics cards or equivalent DirectX 11 compatible graphics card
* 1280x1024 minimum screen resolution
* 20GB free hard disk space

First game I ever saw with an i5 as a recommended spec requirement!
I refuse to play this game until i get my rig up to this standard.

my pc played the demo quite poorly, 15-30 fps on the battle map but going to wait till next year before upgrading my pc, unless SB-E is amazing.

As a guide, I ran the demo on my PC with no slow down in the battles. I maxed the game out at 1080 and it ran butter smooth.

No need, ran the demo maxed out and was super smooth - amazed how much better it ran than empire. Also, considering performance improved significantly from the demo to final release for both Medieval 2 and Empire I am pretty happy :)

Take it my Core 2 (3.4Ghz) 4GB Ram and 8800gts wont be upto the job though? I will be playing on 22" but upgrading to 24" soon

I've completed all the items for my build now and I have the gfx card to go, does anyone know what nvdea card would run Shogun 2 smoothly on high settings? I will be using an i5 and 8 gb or ram also

If you want to run it well in the games/drivers current state, avoid a Nvidia card, there have been lots of problems with them.

First of all its just marketing.

Secondly the i5 the game supposedly recommends is the 2500k i5!

Yeah i got the 2500k edition and will be overclocking to 4.5, strange that it would be ATI friendly, just wondering where i should be aiming...5850/6970 never had an ATI before always been a nvidea boy

Just couldnt resist this beautiful bundle :)

Might be worth reading the Shogun 2 thread to see which hardware combinations are working well together or try posting in the graphics card section. Runs incredibly well on my system and my CPU isn't even overclocked at the moment.

deffo go for an ati card if you want to play this, a lot of dodgy performance with high end nvidia cards yet 5850s running it flawlessly.

Wtf does SB-E stand for?

Sandy Bridge - Enthusiast (LGA 2011)

These are the sandy bridge CPUs that will be released later this year, use a new socket, can be overclocked in the normal way and look like they will be available as quad, hex and even octo core chips.

However, these chips (and associated motherboards) are expected to be much more expensive than existing LGA 1155 parts - and for games not offer much extra performance (since most games are not multithreaded enough to even make full use of a quad core - never mind Hex or Octo cores).

octo :eek: Maybe my dual core needs an upgrade :(

So long as it works well in the games you play (and what ever else you do) - then I would keep what you have. There is always something bigger and faster coming out.

The Octo core does look good - but it sounds like its going to the be the top-end CPU. This means a price of ~£800 when released.

If you are considering an upgrade, I would echo what has been mentioned above - the i5 2500K is a monster of a gaming CPU, it overclocks great and is rather well priced. Just make sure you pair it with a P67 motherboard and a nice graphics card.
