Hi,

Just priced up the following for my Dad but wanted a bit of advice and whether things can be improved. (probably the psu can as i havent got a clue there)

Its mainly going to be for browsing the web and office stuff but my little brother is getting into WOW which is one of the main reasons hes buying a new PC and im sure more games will be played soon.

Ideas?

Intel Core 2 Duo E6600 "LGA775 Conroe" 2.40GHz
GeIL 2GB PC6400C4 800MHz
Asus P5B £290.19

Case - Coolermaster Mystique 631 £69.13
PSU Coolermaster RS-550-ACLY 550W £82.24

HIS ATI Radeon X1950 XT £140.99

Samsung SpinPoint T HD160HJ 160GB £37.59

DVD/CD NEC AD7170S Serial ATA 18x18 DVD±RW £21.14

Samsung SM-206BW 20" Widescreen LCD Monitor £211.49

Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium 64-Bit £75.19

TOTAL £927.96

that seems a bit pricey for playing world of warcraft on, WoW will play on a P3 with 256mb of ram as it is optimised for old and new pc's.

i would get the 1.86 or 2.13 core duo to knock the price down a bit, everything else seems fine, you may want to change the x1950 to a 8800gts if you get the 1.86 c2d.

wow will run best with about 1gb ram or it'll become very slow after a while. cards like 7600gt will be fine for a 20" monitor, if he doesn't play other (more hardware stringent) games

I would suggest this setup, if your willing to pay the little extra it will be well worth it: :D

Cheers stickroad that looks good. I was hoping to get everything under £1000 so thats fine.

As for games... he is mainly playing WOW at the moment but id also like to play a bit of CS/DOD source when im home and im sure my brothers will want to play other games soon. So id rather sort it out now and not have to worry about my Dad moaning that things are slow in 6-12months time.

Thats a very high spec computer. You can get something that will play well for less than 600, depending on how your budget is.

As long as its under £1000 im sure he will be happy. Id rather he bought something that lasts as long as possible.

That is fair enough, just letting you know I built a PC last week for £507 and it runs anything i can throw at it on maximum, CSS etc.
