I would like to replace my ageing system (its from 2005).
I am happy to use my GTX280 gfx card for now to keep costs lower....

But i need a little help choosing the bits i need!

I need a 20"-ish monitor, case, PSU, OS, keyboard, speakers, etc.

I was thinking about the i5 2500K CPU.

Please help!

So you say:

I need a 20"-ish monitor, case, PSU, OS, keyboard, speakers, etc.

I was thinking about the i5 2500K CPU.

But that didn't make sense to me, so do you need everything for the PC itself, or do you already have RAM, HDD, ODD etc because you didn't mention those things?

Also, it would be good if you have any HDD's/ODD's that are SATA, from another computer as then that way we can cut down the cost a bit

I am assuming you need everything for the PC itself, so I came up with this (similar to my PC):

YOUR BASKET
1 x Intel Core i5-2500K 3.30GHz (Sandybridge) Socket LGA1155 Processor - Retail £167.99
1 x Samsung SpinPoint F3 500GB SATA-II 16MB Cache - OEM (HD502HJ) £89.99
1 x Asus P8Z68-V LX Intel Z68 (Socket 1155) DDR3 Motherboard £81.98
1 x Antec TruePower New Modular 550W '80 Plus Bronze' Power Supply £59.99
1 x Cooler Master Elite 430 Windowed Case - Black £39.98
1 x Kingston HyperX Genesis Grey 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C9 1600MHz Dual Channel Kit (KHX1600C9D3X2K2/8GX) £39.98
1 x Gelid Tranquillo CPU Cooler (Socket 754/939/940/AM2/AM2+/AM3/LGA775/LGA1155/LGA1156/LGA1366) £25.99
1 x LG GH24NS70 22x DVD±RW SATA ReWriter (Black) - OEM £18.98
Total : £538.99 (includes shipping : £11.75).

But if your budget is £700, that only leaves about £160 for a monitor, OS, keyboard and speakers which will be a bit hard to find.

So if you have any old HDD's etc that would help

You could also save money by dropping things like the CPU cooler if you are not going to overclock, drop to 4GB RAM etc

Hmmmm.

I don't need the optical drive (the one in my current system is new), i could manage with my current SATA HDD for now aswell (could swop it out later)...

I need a copy of windows 7 aswell!! (ouch!)

Thanks for your help buddy!

In that case you can spend extra on the case and motherboard. I like Asus stuff, my choice would be a P8Z68-V Gen3, or just a regular P8Z68.

PSU is fine for single card up to 570 or there about. Oh well, I might just do one then.

How would this work?

I've not put a PC together from scratch before! Any advice? Good online resource for info?

Is this achievable for me? Honestly?

I will be recycling my GTX280, HDD and optical drive for now, to keep costs lower! I will buy speakers, mouse and keyboard once its all put together! Can i appropriately format the HDD before i remove it to install in the new system?

Is there any particular reason why you chose the i7?
The i5 2500k is almost a £100 cheaper.
Have you also used the 5% discount code?
Did you check the MM for any bargains?

Did you use the ocukxmas voucher code when ordering? If not you just paid like £40 more then you should have.

are your hdd and optical drive sata? if not then they wouldn't work as new motherboards don't have IDE connectors.
