anyone else thinking this way ?
I'm tempted to get an xbox one / ps4 but my sensible side tells me there's no point buying something as soon as it's released as there's bound to be bugs etc that need ironed out

Currently have an E8400 @ 3.6GHz, 4GB RAM and GTX 470

would £500 get me a new MB/SSD/RAM whatever else is needed
totally out of touch with PC specs but I'd like to keep the vid card for now unless there's a new connection type on new MB's !

what sort of improvements am i looking at with the above ?
do the improvements increase much for every £50 more or whatever spent

Decent PSU :)

You should see a excellent performance boost, overclock to 4.4ghz ~ and you should be fine for a while :D

sounds good man
this build is prob 4-5 years old (I think) and can still play anything
nice to have a little cushion tho!
how is the GTX 470 nowadays? it's only about 2 years old. think I bought it when Black Ops 2 came out actually

edit - overclocking is fine with me as long as I don't have to touch it again! current cpu has been at this speed since i first got it and had no problems
cpu I had before that caused no end of problems

It is still a half decent card, there have been lots of advancements since Fermi though as I expect you know, so it will be left in the dust in comparison to newer cards. This tool is useful for comparing GPU's :)

http://www.anandtech.com/bench/product/519?vs=598

Unfortunately some of the GPU's from the 2012 list are not on the 2013 list and visa versa, so you might have to chop and change about to roughly compare some GPU's with others.

I genuinely haven't been following cards/cpus for the past few years
what I know is my last build wasn't mega expensive and has lasted far longer than any other PC I''ve had so the tech must have levelled out
I'll be looking further in to specs etc but it's good to get a gauge of what's what by just asking first :)

This is a really good upgrade from what you are currently using.

If you wanted to go further I would suggest selling your 470 and buying a Amd 280X or a 7970, then you will have a really good system.
