New PC old HDD

I believe it would be recommended that you re-install windows, but I'm not too sure really. Not sure why I posted :P Hopefully others can help better!

I would suggest you do a clean install to be honest if your changing the Motherboard otherwise you will just run into problems later down the line.

Yes do a fresh install.
Although Windows 7 doesn't require you to do a new install when hardware is changed (unlike XP) you should still do one anyways.

It will avoid driver errors which cause you problems, chipset drivers seem to be a big problem.

OK thanks, the reason I asked is that when I made my last PC I couldn't get it to boot just bsod every time I tried, eventually discovered it was because I had 2x4gb of ram installed, tried it with 1 stick and still bsod, tried with an old 2gb stick and I was able to install windows, once windows was installed I was then able to put in the 8gb again and no further problems. So basically had to be less than 4gb. But this new pc will be 2x4gb again and I don't have any other ddr3 I can use. Maybe that was just a bizzare motherboard I had or something (crosshair). Will I be ok this time you think?

Thanks Emphacy yeah I guess chipset drivers would be the main issue never thought of that tbh.

It will be a clean install, just need to grab 1 document which I failed to backup which I could prob retrieve even if I do use a new HDD for fresh install? The 1 document is my Windows 7 Activation code which I recieved electronically doh

If you are using the same drive, install windows on a new partition, you can do this during the windows install process.
If you are using a different drive to install windows, you can access all your files from the other HDD using windows so long as it's connected to your computer.

If you install windows over the partition (The part of the drive windows and all your previous files and stuff are on) then you'll lose everything.

Thanks very much, I will use the new drive and then get the Windows 7 key from the old drive. If I remember right I will get x amount of days before I need to enter the key right?
