New PC on the cards, AMD or Intel?

Hi, I am a bit out of touch at the moment as I am still running mobile AMD cpus in Abit NF7-S ver 2.0 motherboards. All 3 cpus in my machines run well at either 2500 or 2600 mhz so no complaints there.
After lots of playing around I cannot get Vista to install properly, probably because there is no support for the Nforce 2 chipset.
Time to upgrade and so the big question is AMD or Intel.
Looking to keep the comp for some time so will not be doing upgrades all the time like in the past.
Suggest summat that will keep me going that will work with Vista that I can play around with and will be reliable.
All recent comps have been running SATA drives in Raid 0.
I can afford some decent kit so looking to see a good performance difference compared to the mobile XP cpus in current use.

All thoughts appreciated, PeterT

amd, for sure, and NOT now. wait till september,65nm high end ati gpu's mean cheap ranges of top end kit. new amd chips out that, well, should be spanking the intel chips all over the shop. by should, theres more than enough info on the new cpu's for industry people to analyse what it can do and they all think its a killer. ddr3, new chipsets, possibly decent solid state drives with decent write/read speeds and not ridiculous costs. come september time a lot of new stuff will be out, a lot of new faster stuff, and a lot good stuff. if you're looking long term then a ddr3, new chipset, new amd/intel core and new gfx card ni september will last a long time. not to mention vista should have a bit of time to mature, dx10 games to push forwards the numbers of people going to vista, which should push developers to do more and make vista work smoother.

whilst i don't disagree entirely. AMD roadmaps show no support for DDR3 until well in to 2008. By which time it should have matured enough to be a fairly priced option to DDR2.

The trouble with upgrading computers as I have been along this path over the last 8 years is that there is always something new just around the corner.
It is the same with cars, I nearly placed an order for a new golf R32 taking a year to make up my mind. People said wait for the new Audi S3 and so I did wait. I have to say that I am pleased that I did cos I ordered an S3 after just one test drive. Amazing!!
So, getting back to the thread, is September and AMD really the next big thing on the horizon??
Cheers, PeterT

In short, yes.
If it turns out to be not that great then there is also the new Penryn processors from Intel built on the 45nm process and slight IPC improvements.
Either way, if you can wait, you may aswell. If not, then don't bother.

If you have the money for an E6600 then get one. Especially if you want to overclock. If you want a cheaper processor and won't be overclocking then the cheaper AMDs are still a good bet.

Seriously, try to use the carriage return and capitals once it a while.

There's really no reason to wait, unless you want to wait 6 months for a new machine and be an early adopter There's no proof that the new AMD chips will be any better than the current Intel stuff, nor that the new AMD graphics cards will be much better value than nVidia's current offerings.

If you want a new PC then now is a great time; AMD and Intel are in a price war, RAM is cheap and there are some cracking motherboards to be had for under a tonne.

Of course your investment will halve in price over the next year, but that's the same as any computer purchase - it's the nature of the market.

unless the release of something new is imminent, dont bother waiting.

there will always be something new coming and youll end up waiting forever.

if you need it, get it...
