He put all parts together, booted up and installed Windows 7 via external optical drive,

He then went to download the latest BIOS for the motherboard on MSI website and run it with the software it came with the download then the computer stop responding and had to press the Restart button, but now there's no display, tried VGA and HDMI but fans and hard drive are spinning

We pulled the CMOS battery wire from the motherboard and left it for about 5 minutes and plugged it back in but still no display,

so...did he succesfully flashed the new BIOS or not?

was he doing it in Windows or in UEFI?
It was unsuccessful, he extracted the zip file which contained the BIOS file and MSI flash utility, and then utility automatically started up but computer stop responding

More then likely the motherboard is bricked, do you have a gpu you can drop in andcheck?
He doesn't have a spare graphics card to test it, but if buying a graphics card is the way to solve this problem then can he buy any or does it have to be HD 6670 or HD 7750?

It says this on MSI's website when you click on the BIOS download section:

* Please use Trinity CPU to update BIOS before changing to Richland CPU.

so he did try to reflash BIOS from Windows, nice.

the board is kaputt.
He didn't try to reflash BIOS in Windows, he was going to update in BIOS but the zip file had to be extracted to get the BIOS file but the utility automatically started up after extracting it

What are his options now?

buy a differnt motherboard by the sounds of it, and read what it says first before you flash it

He doesn't think it has updated the BIOS in Windows with the MSI flash utility because it stop responding when it load up so he restarted it but now no display,

He will get the same motherboard again and this time, he will just leave the BIOS update
