after 2.5 years of my old pc Ive decided its time for a change..

been out of the game for a while and im not quite up to speed with all the new gear about so if you lot can tell me Ive made any glaring errors or if this is pretty good to go.

OS ---- Win7 64bit
Case---Antec Dark Fleet DF-85 Case
mobo---Asus P6X58D-E Intel X58
cpu-----i7 950 3.06 GHz Socket 1366 8MB
mem---OCZ PC33-1600 DDR3 2000 3X2GB REAPER
cpu cooler---Cooler Master V10 TEC Hybrid
GPU----MSI GeForce GTX 470 Twin Frozr II
sound --- onboard good enough
hdd1-----OCZ 120GB Vertex 2E SSD (windoze)
hdd2-----Western Digital WD20EARS 2TB (games and 'downloads')
PSU----Corsair Professional Series™ Gold AX850
optical-- owt really not that bothered

planning to OC to 4.2

also am i better going with 2 lesser cards in sli ?

TIA.

seems ok.

the V10 cooler is rather expensive when a Titan Fenrir is 335 and still an excellent performer.

went for the v10 as it seems to be on a par with low end water cooling as i intend to oc i thought this would be a quiet and cost effective option it also overhangs the ram and cools that ...

the Reaper ram is very tall, so large heatsinks will get in the way, so a low profile ram such as - http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MY-205-CS will fit

hmm bloody good point and not one i had considered with that v10 .... if i go the v10 route ill change the ram.

how about getting the new 6870 series card from ATI then crossfire later on?

NVIDIA all the way for me im afraid ... i did dabble with the darkside in the 90's and regretted it i also have some quadro's in machines at work and they are always causing bother.

What will you be doing with it?

quite a lot ...

its my new home pc and ill mainly be using it to play games online and off sup com COD etc etc ... i am a CAD/CAM designer though and do take stuff home and therefore i need to be able to handle solidworks assemblies and mastercam without faltering.

it will also be feeding my tv.

Few things that I'd change if I were you:
Drop the memory to some of this stuff: http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MY-042-PA&groupid=701&catid=8&subcat=1389

Cheapest 1600MHz memory kit around, and you don't really need anything more than that. The 2000MHz stuff just isn't really worth the premium.

Drop the V10 for something like a Titan Fenrir or Gelid Tranquillo.

Drop the GTX470 down to a GTX460.

Drop the power supply down to a Corsair TX650 or something like that (there are numerous choices here, the Cooler Master range is pretty good, as are the Antec range as well. Essentially whatever works out cheapest at around 600W or so). You won't need an AX850 for that setup.

Don't for the Caviar Green drives. Performance just isn't up there, as they are supposed to be lower power consumption drives (though the performance decrease definitely isn't worth it overall). Go for one of the 1.5TB models unless you absolutely need the storage.

that ram has heatsink fingers so is possibly too tall.

he will need that 850w psu if he ever got another GTX470 in sli.

GTX470(or the new 6870, but he wants nvidia) all the way, the performance is well worth the difference over a GTX460 especially now with the prices they are at.

you think a 750w psu would handle two 460's or 470's if i go that route later on ?

pretty much decided to drop the v10 for the fenrir now the v10 limited my case options quite a lot too.

what about a samsung f3 1tb ? if i run out of space i can alway get another and raid them.

The memory suggestion, fair enough, I didn't realise. Sorry! :)

As for the power supply/graphics card setup, the GTX470 is an extra £40. Not sure if that's a performance difference that's worth the price, personally.

yes a 750w quality psu will manage SLI GTX470, but I would keep the 850w to be save.

this chart shows maximum power draw under extreme conditions using Furmark - http://www.anandtech.com/show/3836/msis-geforce-n470gtx-gtx-470-sli/6

as for harddrive, just get a single fast 1.5tb drive - http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=HD-168-SE&groupid=701&catid=14&subcat=1279 - bargain.

going to stick with the 850 i think ... like a shotgun ... better to have it and not need it than need it and not have it ;)

also ram height not an issue now ive seen the error of my ways with the v10

so there is no real performance increase to be had between DDR3 1600/2000 ?

.

the Titan cooler is large also, I had to move my memory to the next bunch of slots away from the cooler as it wouldn't fit.

Most of the top spec air coolers are MASSIVE!
And no, there truly is no real world difference between 1600MHz and 2000MHz

sooo im now looking like

Looking good.
You sure you won't try ATi again? :(

Looks like a cracking spec.

The only thing I would change is the case, but that is such a personal choice based on what you think looks good and I do not know anything about the quality of the Antec.
