New PC spec me

whats he need?

everything ie monitor, xp, keyboard plus the goods

or just the rig?

either way would be best to save a bit more cash

That article is a waste of space tbh.

They tested a heavily overclocked cpu against one at stock. Ohh look its faster.
And i'm willing to bet it was hand picked so it was a good clocker anyway.

If the pc is mostly for gaming, and it needs to be under £400 i think it would be better value if its single core.

Do you need a monitor etc or just the pc?
Do you need the pc in the immediate future or can it wait a bit?
939 will get some price drops soon i expect.

I think your looking at a low end 939 system, perhaps with a 7600gt or something.

That CPU is a good one however on air it's not THAT good, certainly not a FX60 beater. I have one and it's great for folding but overclocked only margnially better than a stock 3800+. If your on a budget, don't mind fiddling overclocking, and dual core is a benefit then it's not a bad buy however I do not believe it'll beat a 3800+ in games when clocked to 3.7Ghz which is what mine is reliably stable at.

They were just comparing them to see what it could do... I mean oh look it's an £80 CPU versus a £700 one (965) that seems fair

Intel based one, only worth it if you are willing to OC it. 3.6ghz should be fairly easy and make quite a fast dual core system.

AMD based, should get 2.5ghz if you OC it. Slightly better gaming performance although dual core is nicer for general use.

I have personal experience with both CPUs at both speeds I stated btw :D

Errr... Thats the whole point of the test?
To prove that an overclocked cpu is faster? Their readers are that stupid?
Or was it to prove that a hand picked cpu can clock well?
If every cpu clocked like that no bother then a model at that speed would be available, and it isn't.

Mine does 3.8 at the same voltage theres does but I don't have the cooling to go any higher :)

I havent seen one that won't do 3.8 if it has a decent motherboard/power and cooling.

The reason one at that speed isnt available is because in case you did not notice, they had it set to 1.675v I think and were using water cooling @ 4.1ghz.

I think you'll find that there are few 805 chips that can't get to 3.8ghz. And look at it this way, you're getting a dual core intel chip for the price of a budget AMD single core. An AMD system may be faster, but you'll be paying more (but probably save a bit on the electric)

The point of the benchmark is to show the performance increase gained from the different clocks that can be achieved from that CPU. Which is exactly what they did.. I know people that are hitting 3.8Ghz.. So its not that unbelievable is it?

Because the 805 being marketed as a highly overclockable and cheap dual core, and if there was a 3.8Ghz version available no'one would buy it.. It's like the 840EE.. I don't know, but I'm pretty certain that a very small amount.. If any of them have been sold.

Fair enough.
But if its that easy, why aren't they selling a 3.8ghz version?

Because they would have to increase the voltage past what some boards are designed to supply and past what their stock cooler were designed for which would lower their lifespan and they may not be 100% stable.

All FX60's go to 2.8ghz so why not sell it at 2.8?
All Sempron 3400+ go to 2.2ghz so why not sell it at that?

ect.

ok thanks for all your replies, especially Raikiri, ill see what my mate wants to do.

it was just the PC, but recommendations on the monitor are welcome. not too long about a month.

ok what one would you personally go for, Intel (dual-core) or AMD?

also want to get a more sexy case but still good quality, so can spend a bit more on that.

also noticed you used to different graphics for the 2 systems.

GX-045-LT Leadtek WinFast PCX6600GT-TDH GeForce PCX6600 GT 128MB DDR3 TV-Out/DVI (PCI-Express) - Retail (GX-045-LT)

and the

GX-097-SP Sapphire ATI Radeon X800 GTO 256MB DDR3 TV-Out/DVI (PCI-Express) - Retail (GX-097-SP)

any reason for this? the ATI is only £10 more and 256MB so this better option to go for if i went for Intel route?

thanks for any advice.
