New place vs somewhere you know

Just come back from an amazing week in Kos (again).. and I know how that guy feels about being replugged into the matrix to get away from "RL".

I've been to Kos a few times now and know it quite well but all places are new until you been there yourself, so there's FOMO on an amazing holiday somewhere else.
I've been to quite a few places, but Kos is always my go to "fall back" when I just want a relaxing holiday that I know it will be good.

So what's peoples thoughts? go somewhere new and exciting or go to somewhere you been before that's good?

Funny enough, there was a family in the same hotel where I stayed that was there two years ago.. I think the teenage daughter took a fancy to me last time round as her dad was sending her bright red.. "Oh look, it's your bf!"....

I prefer to go somewhere new personally. I don't think I have ever had a holiday somewhere I've been before, unless you count stopping at the occasional port on a cruise that ive been to in the past.

I'm not very good at relaxing on a beach or by a pool for longer than a few hours so I always want to have somewhere to go and see that I've not seen in the past.

Always somewhere different, but then I couldn't do 2 weeks on a beach or besides a pool in a resort. Give me 4 or 5 city breaks instead.

Mostly somewhere new, unless visiting USA and then always try pop to Detroit to see my cousin and her family for a bit. Also no beach type holidays. Rather not sit and lounge by the pool / beach / resort all day.

It's worth trying new things once in awhile in my opinion, it's not like Kos is going to vanish off the map and shy of being hit by a truck or something you'll have plenty of opportunities to go back.

There is a temptation to visit the same place twice when the first visit was enjoyable. Visited Lanzarote twice. I do like to go to new places though.

I once went to Fuerteventura and got talking to a British couple on holiday there. They told me they had been going to the same place, Fuerteventura, every year for the past eleven years. I just thought that was ten other new places they had probably missed out on.

Do both.

New places interspersed with the odd visit to a place you like. You may just end up finding other places you love even more.

Have done both in the past when we’ve found a region or town we really loved. Stay somewhere you know is going to be great and explore new places in the area.

Only returned to exactly the same place to once, but that was a tenth anniversary trip to where we got married.

Son in law’s parents go back to exactly the same place in Tenerife every summer for two weeks and have been doing this for since him and his brother were little, so close to 25 years now.

As someone whose idea of Hell on Earth is an all inclusive resort full of drunken Brits and their screaming kids running riot, the idea of it being a regular thing is mind boggling.

Just come back from Faro and it’s basically just Britain but hotter - literally nothing foreign about it really but people had timeshares there and had been going for 30 years.

We only did it as our first holiday with the 1 year old to keep things as simple as possible so we have the confidence to fly with him and travel with all the stuff we need. It all worked out really well in the end but it’s definitely not the sort of place we’d go back to…

Depends what your looking for. We generally went to a different place for years until kids and then teens came along and then finding a place that worked for everyone got harder. We did start going to the same places for summer holidays.

Went to the Algarve first time last year but we stayed out of the big resorts and travelled around in a bit. Back again but for a smaller trip and plan again to travel around.

I like both. I have a tiny place in spain and love it. Do the same things every time. No boring beaches just water sports and stuff. Love that it is familiar and have friends there.

But I also love travelling and exploring. See benefit in both.

Been to the same city a few times (New York and Vegas 4 times and San Fran twice) but other holidays try somewhere new.

Edit : apart from Dublin as my wifes family are there so it's not really a 'holiday'

Go back to the same place, Carvoiero in Portugal, at least once a year usually for a week, have been there golfing with mates too. A quick bit of finger maths I reckon it’s 34 times in 21 years now.

Thankfully I’m in a position to be able to afford a few holidays a year, so this calendar year it’s been Murcia, Carvoiero, Vilamoura, Sorrento, back to Carvoiero in August, probably Lanzarote in October.

We do usually try somewhere completely new as a long weekend city break, trying to talk her indoors into Berlin, Copenhagen and Lisbon.

No interest in going to same place twice. The world is too amazing and diverse for that.

My holidays are a bit more intense than most peoples though. I'm not into beaches, hotels or city breaks.

I always try to make most of time in any one place as I assume I'll never come back.

Even at home I'm the same. I've never camped in the same place twice to date.

I do an annual beer trip to Belgium, but otherwise I have never been to the same place twice. I mostly do adventure/hiking type holidays so repeating that doesn't usually make sense. If I was considering a beach holiday I might consider going back to the same destination but most likely not.

A beach holiday for pure unwinding in an area you know is fine for pure relaxation.
Sand and sea.... It's not going to change much....anywhere in the med or aegean sea but........

.....Yes I always want to go to new places if possible but that's not going to be as relaxing from that point of view.
I'm not a beach person at all much more city/architecture.

We do both. 1-3 trips somewhere new doing a range of stuff and these are generally quite busy holidays and are usually anything but relaxing.

We also do 1 unplug and relax beech holiday where we do absolutely nothing for the week. After going to various places over the years, the last few times have revisited the same place.

Why? Well pretty much all resort based beach holidays are basically the same wherever you go in Europe (IMO) in that a resort in Turkey is not a vastly different experience to a resort in Portugal.

So if you find somewhere you like and in terms of quality of the offer, the place we have revisited has pretty much blown everything we had been to previously out of the water for a non-outrageous price. If the trip is for pure unwinding and relaxation, the familiarity actually aids that.
