Currently my employer is advertising for new roles. One of the new positions is at the same grade as me and the minimum basic wage is £700 a year higher. I know its a recession blah blah blah and im lucky to have a steady job but should i mention this to my manager and try and negotiate my salary to the same level as the new person ?

Suggestions please.

Is it the same job, or same grade? Surely there's a difference. If it's the same job then definitely bring it up (either by applying for the job or negotiating a payrise). If it's just the same grade then surely that's a company-wide things where there's room for differences depending on the actual position.

the minimum basic wage is £700 a year higher

Is it the same job - if not then why not stick in an internal application for it?

Also what do you mean by the 'minimum basic wage' - do you mean that the basic is higher but there are other factors such as a discretionary bonus etc.. or do you mean that they have quoted a range for the salary and the bottom of theat range is higher than what you're currently earning?

If the latter is the case then definately have a word with your boss.

If you have only been there 3 months, then i would ignore it.

Although it will wind you up, i would say you need to serve more time before "rocking the boat"

Keep in mind they could pretty much let you go at any point, so given this recession blah blah blah, take the positive from this person being in after you, and having to demonstrate £700pa more value than you!

Bear in mind that it could simply be because we are in a new tax year and the salaries may have been moved up. Have you been informed yet if you will be receiving any sort of annual pay rise? For example say the roles were £35k for the last tax year, a 2% rise would mean an extra £700. The new position would obviously be advertised at the new rate.
