Well like you said, the Explorer is older but you can't tell at all, it's smaller though, not as long, but again they're so big you don't notice. It's been a while since we went on them so it's hard to pin-point the things missing but yeah the flow rider isn't there, nor was the rock climbing and a few other things.
We got the Explorer out of NYC last October, it was great, only problem with getting it from my NYC the people on the Explorer were mostly American, old and from New Jersey. The Royal Caribbean line are notorious for having younger people on and that showed when we got the Liberty from Miami, we sat with two other honeymooners for dinner at night.
So might be worth taking that into account if you like to 'mingle'!
