new power supply time.

I am at the point where I think my machine needs a new power supply.

I plan to do some upgrading in the next couple of months and I don't think my current power supplyies will cope with the load I am putting on them.

I currently have the following setup

Asus P5N32E Sli (680i)
4X1GB OCZ Platimum DDR2 6400
2x DVD Rewriters
6x HDD's (3x 74GB Raptors, 2x500 WD,1x160GB Maxtor) all SATA
BFG 8800 OC GTX
Fan controller
E6600
Plus a 4 120mm Fans + 1 80mm Fan

So I currently have all this loaded across 2 480W PSU's (Antec TrueBlue + NeoPower). I currently have to spread the load of the graphics card across both as one can not fully power it up.

So what would you recommend.

I am looking to add the following components over the next year:

A second 8800GTX
SATA 4X Expander card
4X SATA hdd's various sizes (120GB's & 160GB's) as I have these kicking about but not doing anything at the moment. Will eventually upgrade these to 500GB's or bigger in the future.
Upgrade to Quad Core.
Look to upgrade to 8GB if needed but I don't think so at this stage.

I mainly want to move from the two psu system I have to a single psu system to try and reduce noise and heat from the case as I think these are the main contributors to my case hitting high 40 - 50C which in turn is affecting the cooling on of my cpu fan which is hitting high 50's - low 60's.

Hello davetherave2, I honestly can't see the Corsair HX 620W ATX2.2 Modular SLI Compliant PSU causing you any problems with dual 8800GTX's. Have a read through some of the posts over at the Corsair forums:

HX620 enough for....

Will the 620HX handle this system well?

Corsair 620HX PSU and 8800GTX SLI proof

620 HX Dual 8800 GTX Links?

Enough power for my setup?

I must say that reading through numerous threads at the Corsair forums, they are extremely helpful.

Now I would just like to clarify with you about the amount of hard drives that you will be running after you have upgrade since reading through your original post again I am not completely sure? If you will be running as many as 6 hard drives in your system then you would be better of with a higher wattage power supply.

May I suggest either the Corsair TX 750W ATX2.2 SLI Compliant PSU (Just take into account that the TX models are not Modular) or the Enermax Infiniti 720W EIN720AWT ATX2.2 Modular SLI Compliant PSU.

I do apologize for recommending the Corsair HX 620W ATX2.2 Modular SLI Compliant PSU. I didn't take into consideration the other system components that you may possibly be running. :)

Hello davetherave2, that power supply would be fine. However, you honestly wouldn't need such an high wattage power supply as that unless you are thinking of running 3 of the latest graphics cards in your system. :)

I think with 10+ hard drives, SLI, 2x dvd drives and the rest of the kit anything less than 1000w would be unwise, I've had TriSLI on a 1000w and it was under pretty heavy load :)

well at about £20 more that seems like a nice psu.

this bit made me laugh though:

World's first PSU with a dedicated RAM power cable to support next generation 32-64GB RAM systems

when on earth are we going to see systems with 32GB of RAM. :D

yeah i thought as much still if we are already seeing 8GB sets coming out I'm sure it won't be long until we see 4GB being the norm in the retail market.

It seems that more and more retail machines are coming with 2GB as standard compared to 12 months ago.

Thanks Andy for the link but even so I still think 850 is too low but do'able

the problem I have is that with potentially 10 HDD's I am going to need a lot of 12V rails and with potentially 3 Graphics cards in my machine or 2in SLI and a physics card i think 850 may not give me enough head room in the future.

This is why I am looking at the 1000W plus range as I think this will last me a lot longer.

When I brought my first Antec TrueBlue 5 years ago I never thought I would need anything bigger but as time has gone I have had to add a second PSU to balance the load of my equipment.

I am currently waiting for the Icy Dock MB-455SPF 5-Bay Internal SATA Drive Enclosure to come into stock so that I can install these and then prepare for the hdd upgrade and psu upgrade.

:D I had the true blue 480W.... Grate little PSU.

The Antec 850W I have now is running my Q6600 at 3.6GHz, 4GB RAM, Raptors in RAID + 2 Storagge drives, Water pump.....etc, etc....

Try the 1000W version of the Antec if you want a standard size or the Enermax 1000W if your case will take it :)

well this will be going into my coolermaster stacker (original) so space shouldn't be an issue.

It seems such a shame as the true blue and neo power have served me well over the years and have performed exceptionally well with everything that I threw at them.
