Hey guys as the title says ive just ordered one of these (AMD Athlon 64 X2 5200+ Socket AM2 2.7GHz) to replace my very aging Amd Athlon 64x2 3800
has anyone had any experience with this processer ? if so could you let me know if its any good thanks :)

lol

i've got 2 of them in runnin systems at the moment
5200 w/ 1m l2 @2700mhz
5200 w/ 2m l2 @2600

it is a noticeable improvement over a 3800, but may depend on the board you're using

This thread is rather interesting. Looking at Wikipedia there are a couple of Socket 939 X2 3800 chips (Manchester and toledo cores) and a few AM2 X2 3800 chips (Windsor cores + energy efficient version). Please occupy yourselves while I go flip a coin.

Edit: Coin landed and I realised It was you in this thread. So it's a Socket 939 chip you currently own, my condolences.

I think you should return the processor unopened for a refund. I know you don't want to let your new computer die, but bringing it to a servicable standard is going to cost more than a new, better system

Not just yet, it may be a board with ddr2 and s939. The odds aren't good, terribly actually, but there might be one out there

Aye, I suppose it could be, but he still has the problem that he has s939 board (as he is adamant he is currently using a s939 chip) and bought a new AM2 chip . I think he may have made a mistake with saying he has DDR2 initially, I suspect it is just DDR1.

Lol, ok. Well atleast it will all come together correctly. Should be a decent performance upgrade, but in most games you will still be limited by your GPU.

Sure, what's your budget?

If you want the best GPU for little money then your best bet is looking for a second-hand Nvidia 8800 GT/GTX/GTS 512MB, 9800 GT/GTX(+), GTS 250 or ATI 4850/4870. If you can find any of these for £55 or less they are well worth it. If you want to buy new, this is the minimum card you want, this if you can stretch to it.

whats better out of the 8800 and the 9800gt ?

It depends on which 8800 model - but the 8800GTX and 8800GTS 512MB are a good bit faster than the 9800GT. The 8800GT is effectivly the same as the 9800GT except for a die-shrink to 55nm, so the gaming performance of the two is exactly same. If you find 8800 GTS 320MB or 640MB models - these will be slower than the 9800GT.

No prob, happy to help.

I haven't got any vids of my system, but I got this pic.

(from this thread)

Only difference is that I recently upgraded to a GTX 295 (though I was surprised to find it was the same size as my old 9800GTX) and the PC Power & Cooling PSU was replaced with the modular corsair.
