So i think is called a gazebo :o:o

Ive decided i want to try and rescue this old thing. Make it look nice again so ive got somewhere to sit and take a break while im doing other stuff.

I thought the best place to start would be the roof. Getting all that old stuff off there, cleaning and replacing it. Then the rest of should have a bit of rain protection while im doing it.

Anyone got any suggestions? Or experience with these things?

I guess you would have to replicate the clip on bamboo arrangement.
How are the canes fixed in there?

Pond looks epic, would be stunning if dug out.
(massive job btw haha)

The entire roof structure is actually metal and ive found out that you can buy the bamboo/thatch stuff in sheets. So im HOPING it shouldnt be too hard to get the roof sorted.

Yeah the pond is awesome, but the level is so low at the moment. gotta try and work out how to keep it more full.

Is that your garden?

Its more of an out of control natural bombsite at the moment :/

I live in a flat at the moment so its not technically my garden..but its the garden at work..or rather its the land that im trying to manage and turn into a garden.

A lot of sanding required, then oil it up.
Probably want an electric sander, going through several grit levels and ending up on ~1000 will make the wood feel very soft to the touch, which is nice, if you have the time.

180 grit is what we went up to on internal furniture so should be fine for external. We only used finer stuff (600 grit W&D) for sanding between coats. Belt sander would have the job done in no time.

Id then put some clear wood preserver on there, to kill any fungi, dry/wet rot, wood worm etc. Then oil or maybe sikkens.

Wow up to 1000 grit level?

Im using this as an excuse to buy a new sander :o only got a 60 grit belt on..

what is sikkens?

You only need that, however going higher gives wood a very nice soft feel, you just won't get at those levels. It all depends if you can be bothered. Commercially they never go that high, due to time and cost.

Also because some finishes can have problems adhering to wood that has been sanded too fine. 240 is as smooth as you will ever need for furniture, unless you want a glass like finish. I only go to 240 grit on the walnut grips I make and they feel nice and smooth. Only time I ever go below 240 is when i am filling the grain by wet sanding the oil in. Then I use 320-400 grit to create a fine wood dust/oil slurry.
