New RAM

I just bought a new stick of 8GB RAM to install to make my total RAM 16GB but it is much bigger than anticipated so would not fit under my CPU fan. Plus, I would have to take the CPU fan off in order to fit a new stick in which I do not feel I would be able to do. Should I return this new stick of RAM?

I was a bit too hasty and did not look into it in as much detail as I perhaps should have.

Thank you.

If you can then yes! Get one that fits.

I bought this system on ocUK, I probably should have got the same sticks that I have in my system already!

Do you recommend going to a shop and asking if I could watch them install it so I can see them removing my fan etc?

I would return the new RAM and try and get the same as the ones already installed. (or even replace all with a 2x8gb kit)

If you got a single stick of RAM, you will be running in single channel instead of dual channel mode. Plus it may be different timings than the other sticks of RAM.

What is the spec of your PC?

i7-3770K 3.50GHz
TeamGroup Elite 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C11 1600MHz Dual Channel Kit
HIS HD 7950 3072MB GDDR5
Seagate Barracuda 7200RPM 1TB SATA 6Gb/s 64MB Cache

I have bought that RAM as it is on offer at the moment. I just need to find out how to remove the CPU Cooler. Do I need to reapply the thermal paste?

Looking at the manual for you cooler, you will have to remove the middle fan and use a long screwdriver to undo 2 X screws that hold the cooler to the retention plate.

You could remove the front fan instead though and you may have enough room to fit the new RAM.

If you do remove the cooler, i would apply fresh paste.

Link to the manual if you don't have it. :)

Okay thank you very much. I think I would need to remove the cooler to put the new sticks of RAM in. I will post images tomorrow. However, looking at thermal paste, they vary very much in price. I'm not sure what I need. I have an Intel Core i7-3770K 3.50GHz (Ivybridge) Socket LGA1155 Processor (77W) - Retail.

Thank you.

Removing the cooler shouldn't be too difficult, i'm sure there is an online manual that can direct you the right way, just remember to get some kind of high percentage alcohol or rubbing alcohol to remove the paste before applying the new paste.

Okay, here is a photo of my configuration. I have 2 more sticks of the same type of RAM to go in and accompany the other 2 sticks.

Guessing I will need to remove the cooler? No idea how to do it.

I know I need to clean the fans as well.

*Bump*

I may be able to get room to install RAM if I just take that fan away but would I need to unscrew the whole cooler?

[EDIT] Ah, I don't think removing the fan will help. It still looks as though I would need to get under the cooler.

Not your cooler as i could not see yours on YouTube.

If you go to 21:30, it shows how to mount the cooler. The method is about the same as yours, just do the reverse to remove it.

Saying that, you do have very little room to get at the middle fan clips, but should be doable. You may be better removing the gpu and doing the bottom fan clip first.
