Hello all,

brand new to the forums and looking to get a new rig. I've posted a thread for this at http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?p=8051046#post8051046 and CarlD has been very helpful. Cheers m8.

I am pretty much a noob these days and i understand that with the advent of DX10 arriving old gfx cards will be obsolete.

I am hoping to build an overclockable system with dual gfx cards but possibly should wait until the new DX10 cards are out. Confused... then again what's new??

Therefore. with the spec that I am hoping to use (which you can see on the link above) which gfx card do you think i should get in the meantime to tide me over so to speak ro have i got it all wrong?? Hehe.

Oh and if you think I should change the spec please feel free to comment. After all i'll hvae the comp for a while.

Thx in advance,

Whitey.

your dx9 card will be far from obsolete , i cant understand why people think that , dx9 cards will and are powering through dx9 games just now , from early reports just as fast as the g80 in some cases!
dx10 games wont be taking advantage of this for a while maybe a year so get a dx9 dont line nvidias deep pockets!

Cheers m8, so whic card would you recommend with the rig that i've quoted.

If the cards can't or won;t be using DX10 for a year or so, then i might as well build my ultimate rig now...

That begs the question as to which cards. ?? I can only afford one at the mo and was looking to get the X1950XTX 512, but that was going to be on an AMD crossfire mobo and now it would seem i've changed over to an intel E6600 processor so now i'm really confused.... More stella should help. It is the weekend. :D

Ta,

if you intend to over clock well look this is going to be my spec
similar to you
e6600 conroe
580 w hiper psu
2 gb ram
the mobo i went for is a ds4 gigabyte
i would get a single fast card just now , the x1900 master cards look good and are about £70 cheaper than the x1950 master and you dont get much of a performance increase for the £70 , what you do get is a great card and a lot quieter cooling fan than the x1900 ,
i will go for a x1950 master i just ordered my e6600 yesterday , for a great price lol :D i will be ordering my x1950 xt master in the next few weeks stuff dx10 cards at the moment , if you get the master and decide to get another x1950 you will have the ultimate dual card config that will blast through ALL games inc cyrsis
and in the future you will have 2 cards to sell on once dx10 becomes viable , hope this helps!

Rippling.

yes that helps m8... Hp7909 has put on a lovely spec for me http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?p=8051225#post8051225 and with the mobo he's recommended i can have crossfire as well.. Although i'm not entirely sure what that gives me..... Think this means if i buy crossfire cards the mobo does all the work of linking them together...

Is there a book for noobs answering all my simple questions...

Anyway if i buy two of these carsds eventually, (X1950XTX) will i be able to put a water cooler system on them both??

Think i'm looking to buy the x1950 as DX10 won't affect me for a long time. I'll have to buy windows vista as well....

What do you reckon??

no need to water cool the x1950 m8 they run cooler anyway a cross fire compatable mobo means ati have certified that the borad has 2 16x pcie slots that the x19540 plugs into , one slot for each card , the cards are then linked together with a "dongle" basicaslly a lead that connect to both cards together so they work in crossfire :)
glad i helped you rather than asking questions lol
also graphics cards are the worst thing to make a decision on as there are so much to chose from , you really have to bite the bullet and settle for one card and order it now , as the more the wait the harder it gets :D

only other card you might consider is the new 1950 pro , esp the gecube one , 2 would cost £350 but i want to wait till the overclock benchies are in ......

Do you reckon these would be better than the x1950XTX 512 then??

Would buy one card now and one in the new year....

Ta,

Whitey.
na the 1950 pro is a mid range card x1950xtx top of the line 2 x1950 pros will equall or maybe be slightly faster than one x1950xtx , but 2 x1950xtx soke everything atm inc. quad sli !

Damn, now you've mentioned quad sli............ Quad means four.....

Er... Is this right...... Should i get my coat and hot tail it outta here..

hehe.

So,

Where are these reports stating that DX9 cards are just as fast as the G80 in some cases?

For someone who asks a lot of simple questions etc...

You suddenly seem to know all the facts

LMAO :D

Thx geez, but how long before they get released??

technology moves forward so quickly that we can wait around forever waiting for prices to come down.

Christ I still remember being in Currys prob 4-5 years ago and looking at a 42 Plasma TV i think it was... How much?? £10,000. yes 10k.... And someone bought the factory display model for £6,500.... FFS who are these ppl.

Anyway, i've kinds talked myself into a new system and want to buy it in the next couple of days.... So... What do you recommend?

If anything, DX10 cards would bring the cost down for me buying a second DX9 card.... Horahh!!!

My main post is on http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?t=17642061 and if you would change or do something different please feel free to comment.

Cheers m8,

DX 10 cards the G80 is due on the 8th November.

Its not a good time at the mo to buy a gfx card.

Just wait till the new gen hits and see what happens with the previous gen pricing.

Ah, didn't realise that.... Means waiting another few weeks and seeing what happens to the prices... can't go down more than £50 though can they?? Economics and all that??

Something to consider tho... Thank you.

Similar here to, E6600 Conroe, DS4, 2Gb of the Geil pc6400 Ultra Low Latency Ram is coming my way.

Already got an x1800 XT 512mb thats cutting through everything fine on my 3500+, but im going Conroe as im not getting the full potential out of it even though its cutting through everything fine as said, the Conroe will allow my card to breathe a bit more for the up-coming titles, so ill get a bit longer out of it before i need to upgarde it. :)
