New rig - best time to buy and who will build it for me?

The GTX is the most powerful, IIRC the GTS is basically a lower power and more powerful.

This is not including monitors right?

Would you consider buying a better graphics card at a later date, or would you prefer to have sat the 8800 now?

Quad Core or Dual?
Lower power and more powerful? :p

I don't need any monitors, got a 1080p screen, Dell 2005FPW and another monitor on the way.

I'd prefer an 8800 now in all honesty. Don't mind dual or quad, but quad would be nice. :)

Sounds quite decent, what's the damage between dual and quad? Is it worth it for the future? Same with 2GB > 4GB, worth it?

There is a considerable difference, but from what people have said about owning Quad, they are just not using the power it gives.

With the 2GB and 4GB im not too sure about, from reading on the forums apparently 4GB would not be needed for atleast another 5-6 months or more.

To save money, i would say get the Dual Core, overclock it and it will be more than enough power for you.

In the future it MAY be helpful to have a Quad Core, but it is not essential as dual core is plenty.

4gb really isnt needed at the moment, no games benefit from it. Go for it if you want to be future proof.

I also heard heavy video editing is better with 4gb.

Yeah, I suppose I could go Quad in the future, it's not that hard to change a processor and no drivers to pish around with.

What's the price difference between 2GB and 4GB, I ask because I'm not sure which is best to look at!

4gb ram isnt normally recomended at the moment as xp doesnt make full use of the 4gb unless its the 64bit version. how ever i assume that will be sorted in vista ?.

the quad is faster but the 6600 is overclocked to 3gig. so is no slouch, exaac diffenence in speed i dont know

Yeah, 4GB would definately help but you would be doing some very heavy editing for it to be needed.

If the 2GB isnt enough when you get it, you can simply add to it at a later date when prices have dropped.

No games would need 4GB for another year or so (where you would benefit majorly from it).

If you have the spare cash go for the 4GB, but the same could be said to get the Quad Core.

If it was me, i would go for the system above and upgrade as prices drop with new components released at a later date.

4GB is not really needed at all, unless you feel it becomes sluggish (which im sure it wouldnt)

Yeah, good point, is that all built and on OCuk's website?

If I need a Quad the difference in price will be slightly less in a month or two, same with the RAM, I presume it has four slots for all the RAM?

Yep it is this one:

"Ultima OC 8800GTX" Intel Core 2 DUO E6600 2.40GHz @ X6800+ 3.00GHz Dual Core SILENT DDR2 System - XP Home

Brilliant, cheers - will probably go for that next week or so. :)
Should work wonders with the monitors you mentioned!

Thats a serious machine for anything thrown at it :)

Ohh, one last point - I'll have a DVI > HDMI lead running from one DVI port, how do I connect another two monitors (one VGA one DVI/VGA) to it?

Hey,

Just read through this thread and since no one has offered then I may as well :D

If you're still looking for someone to build and configure a system for you, let me know. I would be happy to help out and have some spare time during this week.

Anyway my email is: adam2372 AT googlemail DOT com

Peace!

If you bought the components yourself and got it built you would save around £450 (compared against the pre-built system Syk3 posted). Granted that doesn't include software or peripherals, but you have allot of room to work with on those.

However, I personally would go for something like this instead:

Intel Core 2 DUO E6400 "LGA775 Allendale" 2.13GHz (1066FSB) - Retail
Gigabyte GA_945PL_S3 (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard
OCZ 2GB (2 x 1GB) PC2-6400 Dual Channel Platinum Revision 2 XTC Series DDR2 (OCZ2P800R22GK)
Gainward BLISS GeForce 8800 GTS 640MB GDDR3 HDTV/Dual DVI (PCI-Express) - Retail
Hitachi Deskstar 7K160 NCQ 160GB SATA-II 8MB Cache - OEM (0A32728)
NEC AD7170A 18x18 DVD±RW Dual Layer ReWriter (Black) - OEM
Antec P180 Advanced Super Midi Tower Case - No PSU (Black)
Seasonic S12 600W Silent ATX2.0 Power Supply

Of course all the components would be purchased from Overclockers UK.

The difference is about £800 when compared to the original pre-built system Syk3 posted.

I won't go into a sales pitch, but I have allot of experience with building PCs. I use to sell 10+ a week on eBay (all put together myself). Plus my house is 100% smoke free :D

Send me an email and we can have a chat if you like.

Shame you don't live in my neck of the woods, I'm always building rigs, installing etc. infact i've done 3 between boxing day and new years eve!

Don't pay more than £100 though as it shouldn't take longer than a full day unless there's problems.
