Hi,

My latest build is being a pain in the ass tbh, jumping from a problem to another, and in the latest I got kinda stuck.

My build:

i5 6600K
ASUS GTX 970 directcu II OC 4GB
Gigabyte Z170-GAMING K3
Kingston Fury Black 16GB (2x8GB) DDR4 2400MHz
SAMSUNG EVO 850 240GB
Super Flower Golden Green HX 550W

At first, it simply wouldn´t give signal to the monitor. To make things worse, after some time it simply restarted, so I could not even access to the BIOS.

Removed the graphics card from the rig and connected the computer via HDMI to the monitor. Nothing happened.

Tried changing the 2 RAM modules, and it was weird because sometimes with one module in a certain slot it worked, but other times it didn't. After some experimentation with the RAM modules I thought that it was stable, so proceeded with Windows installation, still without the graphics card.

The installation of Windows 8.1 was going fine till the point the process required the computer to restart. Basically it did not turn off completely. The monitor lost the signal, but the fans, leds and everything in the computer was still running. Left if for a few minutes and at the end turned off manually. When turning it on Windows 8.1 was installed and running, so no problem's there. Turned it off to try it with the GPU and the computer again did not turn off completely. This only happened twice, as I turned it on and off a few more times to check it, but never happened again.

With everything working fine I decided to add the GPU, but when installed the resolution went to 1024x728px and couldn't be changed. I assumed that it was because of the BIOS or tthe drivers, so I just removed it and went to update the OS to Windows 10 before updating anything.

Updated to Windows 10 without the GPU in the rig without any issues, running at 1920x1080p. Added the GPU, connected it through a HDMI and the resolution went again to 1024x728px.

It happened before with other builds, so I just assumed that it was something with the BIOS or the drivers. Updated the mobo bios via Q-Flash and nothing changed. Decided then to go to GPU drivers.

Tried first installing Nvidia Game Ready Driver software, as the Asus UK link of drivers for my GPU was not working. Updated some drivers from there but nothing helped, and, as a matter of fact, it went worse, because previously in the panel resolution I was able to choose different resolutions. It wouldn't work, saying 'The resolution you have selected can not be applied', but now I was only allowed to choose between 800x600 and 1024x728.

Went to the Asus US website and manage to download a BIOS update for the GPU, but again, nothing improved. Last think I tried was installing a different version of the Nvidia Game Ready Driver (just for the sake of trying something). During the installation it removed all the previous drivers and started installing new ones, when it said it was going to restart the pc. The monitor lost the signal, but the computer did not turn off completely. Waited for like 10min and ended up doing it manually.

The problem starts here: The monitor has not received signal again. Again, it turns on, led's and fans do start, but the monitor do not receive a thing. First I tried without modfiying anything, afterwards I tried removing the GPU and going back to the integrated graphics. Then I thought I would try to swap the RAM modules, but without luck this time.

At this point I just do not know what else I can do. Everything is connected right, but still the monitor does not get any signal.

If the monitor works fine when connected to the onboard graphics then the monitor is fine, try the graphics card in another slot and see if that helps, if not then more then likely it means either the graphics card is faulty.

Are you able to test the graphics card in another system?

I could do it, but the main issue atm is that, even without the GPU the monitor doesn't get signal from the PC

do you have another build you could try the gfx card in or even borrow the PSU out of it?
If your local to me I would be happy to test a few bits in my machine or vice versa let you try my spare psu sadly no DDR4 though

I will test later today the GPU and the PSU in my other rig, but again, can't see how the fault may be there when the rig without GPU still does not deliver signal to the monitor (and the PSU worked fine until the last driver I tried to update).

And I'm afraid I'm nowhere near you... Birmingham:(

yea youre a bit far away..

I would try them just to rule it out.
reading what you have wrote I would suspect it could be bad ram or motherboard but it may be that the psu is playing up. a bad psu can give some strange errors.

if you can get it up and running I would run memtest on the RAM modules.

also you said you had resolution issues when the card was installed so trying it in your other rig will check this out.

Before switching parts I headed to a local store to buy a speaker for the motherboard, in order to see if I could find out sth else about the problem.

Cleaned the thermal paste and applied it once again, connected the speaker to the mobo and turned on. No display and one single beep.

From Gigabyte website one short beep means that it's okay (from their website, 1.AWARD BIOS 1short beep :System normal), which actually does not make sense, because something is deff wrong.

I'm gonna try my other PSU now, just to discard that part, but I'm getting really frustrated with this.

Well, I think the PSU is not the problem, as it is running my Haswell rig with a OC'ed G3258 and a R9 285, which should be more power consuming than a stock 6600k with a GTX 970

Sounds like the monitor to be honest then, do you have another monitor/TV that you can use?

Said it in an earlier reply. Tried with 2 different monitors and a TV, none of them worked.

And not only that, as the 3 of them work with my other computer, so I think I can be safe saying it shouldn't be that.

At this point I would take everything apart, put the motherboard on a non conductive surface with only the CPU, single stick of RAM, PSU, connect via the onboard HDMI to a monitor and then try turning it on.

Make sure you don't have any USB devices connected, make sure that the CPU fan is plugged in.

I was preparing everything to do it now, as I was waiting for the BIOS of the mobo to reset. I took out the battery of the mobo, waited for like half an hour (it said 5-10min, but I was checking the PSU in my other rig in the meantime) and inserted into the motherboard again.

Nothing happened, same result as previously. The motherboard turns on and after a few seconds beeps once, but no signal (did it without the keyboard and mouse)

Ok, I simply can't think of any solution for this... I'm going to assume that either the CPU or the motherboard is dead or faulty. Is there a way of making sure that it is either the CPU or the mobo which is faulty, or should I just return both?

I had the same problem with a Gigabyte board.

Sent mine back and got an Asus today.

I did read some reviews on amazon about a few Gigabyte boards being dead on arrival recently

Maybe I missed it but have you tried the gpu in your 2nd pc.. as to me sounds like a hardware fault with it hanging while turning off.. before when a had a hard drive that was starting to go faulty . It made the pc hang for a while when booting up... also not sure if you have other hd's connected , if so just try it with the 1 hard drive. Good luck !!
