[EDIT] it's all changed, ive got an i7, discussion for builds starts at post #7! [/EDIT]

hey peeps,
i had a thread before newyears asking about the setup for a new computer, made for about 60/40 gaming and photoshop/flash/After Effects work.

the original build is this, i cant be bothered to re-do the shopping cart etc because, except for the prices, its the same.

now im not concerned with the prices, im aware of the new numbers, all im wondering is if i buy it within the next few days, will i get a good run out of it?(year, year and a half)

note: im not getting the 260 at the moment, due to cash, im sticking with my 8800, however i will upgrade to one, not necessarily that bfg one, soon.

OR

should i save some more and try and sort out an i7 rig?
the thing is i doubt i can get anything decent for under 1k with an i7 and tbh my income isnt very stable so i dont know when ill reach that.

thanks in advance :)

hey,
I'd save for i7.

Q6600-many people upgrade to better cpu, what's the point to buy "old" components if u can get futureproof for "about same price"

Yeah, sorry, but I definately would not be spending a grand on that sytem now, wasting your money.
Post your current specs and we can advise on your best upgrade path

A spec similar to the one you had. I've replaced the GTX260 for the 4870, pretty much because of the price, performance is much the same with both cards.

I've swapped the PSU out for a slightly less powerful model, but will power the above rig with no problems, it's also modular.

Like above there really isn't such a thing as future proofing, you can get the best there is at the time, but it'll soon be behind in the times. Only go for i7 if you justify the extra price for the added performance and if you need it. For me, my core 2 duo system will serve me for a while yet, mainly as I don't need anything more.

ok so things have changed kinda dramatically.
thanks very much for the replies everyone.

i managed to pick up an i7 920 for £196. :D i saw it cheap and thought to myself "screw it might as well". (hasnt arrived yet, so i might be getting a peice of wet fish for all i know, but im excited)

so, excluding graphics card, im looking for a new build coming in at under £1000.

if anyone has any ideas, that'd be awesome, looking for:
mobo, ram, dvd-r(something cheap, i dont mind), PSU, cooling, HardDrive i was thinking of a 640gb western digital thing, OS will be vista 64.

my case is a nice lian-li a10b gathering dust from chirstmas

[edit] i apologise, there are a lot of these threads already out and about, i just got excited. dont feel you have to reply :)

Power supply manufacturers should be held to account in every way possible. I'd rather have a 620W Seasonic/Corsair than a 1200W Thermaltake - because one is sold on it's actual power output and the other is sold on a theoretical maximum it might be able to deliver on a good day with a following wind.

So you need an i7 rig for £1000, excluding the graphics card, CPU and case? If so what graphics card did you go for? Just so I know what to spec.
