Hi all! Been reading through the forum and have found that it has helped me no end, so far that is. As yous can probably gather i am building a new rig to replace my P4 3.0 ghz 7600gt agp dinosaur.

I have a grand to spend. I may be able to stretch it a little. I have decided on a rig based around these bits.

The rest I am really unsure about. I will be over clocking the 6600 (quality heat sink & fan needed) and Graphics. I would like at least 2gb of memory. I already have mouse keyboard and speakers.

The rig will be mainly used for gaming.

Thanks in advance for any advice :)

Here hows this, slightly over but you get a nice 8800GTS 640 with it. I have changed the E6600 to the E6420, you wont notice the difference when overclocked.

Samsung SM-226BW 22" Widescreen LCD Monitor - Glossy Black

Intel Core 2 Duo E6420 "LGA775 Conroe" 2.13GHz (1066FSB) - Retail

Scythe Ninja Plus Rev.B Heatpipe CPU Cooler (Socket 478/754/939/940/AM2/LGA755)

Gigabyte GA_P35C_DS3R (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR2 & DDR3 Motherboard

Crucial Ballistix 2GB (2x1GB) DDR2 PC2-5300C3 667MHz Dual Channel Kit (BL2KIT12864AA663)

Samsung SH-183LBEBN 18x18 DVD±RW Dual Layer Serial ATA Lightscribe ReWriter (Black) - OEM

Western Digital Caviar SE16 250GB 2500KS SATA-II 16MB Cache - OEM X2

Leadtek GeForce 8800 GTS 640MB GDDR3 HDTV/Dual DVI (PCI-Express) - Retail

Lian-Li PC-7 PLUS Aluminium Midi-Tower Case - Black

Corsair HX 520W ATX2.2 Modular SLI Compliant PSU (CMPSU-520HXUK)

Total : £1,089.04

This is pretty similar to stickroad's spec. I included the 320 MiB version of the GTS becasue at 1680x1050 that should do just fine. The saved money kept it under budget and allowed for the E6600.

Thanks for the advice. It is surprising what you can get for a grand nowadays :)

One thing i am a little confused with is memory. Wouldn't it be worth me splashing a little more to get this: http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MY-093-CR&groupid=701&catid=8&subcat=

Graphics wise: http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=GX-074-HT&groupid=701&catid=56&subcat= It is only 25 quid or so more than the leadtek, again is it worth it??

Basically with these two changes, it will take me up to around £1100 - £1150. I will stretch to this only if it is worth it. This would be my maximum as I would have to rain in some bday funds from my missus in advance. :D

Nope the 5300 Memory will overclock to the Crucial that is rated at 8500.

If your going to be spending 230-250 on a GPU, get a 8800 GTS 640.

I disagree with that one. The extra memory will simply raise the memory latency whilst still having exactly the same core. If you can afford to splash out a little more then go for a GTX over a 2900.

Please explain?

I'm not 100% certain about this one but I've had issues with cards with more memory before.

The larger amount of memory on them makes the memory latency higher, like 4gb kits run at higher frequencies. It being a GTS its exactly the same core but the memory operates slightly slower. At that resolution then no more than 320mb. Please correct that anyone if thats wrong :)

He`s only going to be running 2GB, yes he could probally get away with a GTS 320, depends if he likes playing games like Quake, Doom3 with all the eye candy up. :D

Think you missread my post m8, i'm saying that higher amounts of memory run at slower frequencies using RAM as an example :)

Ok so basically your saying the 640 version will be to much for a 22inch screen right?

No, i'm saying that 640mb GTS should not be bought just because you can afford it, it should only be bought if you need the extra memory for higher resolutions. Which on a 22" isn't needed. ;) GTX is you got the extra cash for the better core.

Thanks all. I only went to eat my chinese, yous have been busy. I understand very little of it tho :o Think i am going to stick with the spec laid out by stickroad and Billy. Doesn't seem like it is worth the extra expense as i am oc ing. Thanks once again
