Hi All,

My 4690K & 1060 have served me well but it's time for an upgrade.

I was hoping someone would be kind enough to "fill in the blanks" with the remainder of my desired build. I hope the below shows up as intended!

My basket at OcUK:

Total: £1,123.16 (includes delivery: £13.20)

So I'd need a suitable PSU, preferably 1TB of M2 SSD storage & a CPU cooler.

I'll be purchasing a new graphics card via the members market, probably a 3070, whilst waiting for the market to adjust with the release of the 4000 series & whatever AMD will bring to the table with their next offerings.

If you're going with a 7600X I'd wait for the B boards in (supposedly) early October, a £350 board for a Ryzen 5 is just... :o

If you're waiting for a 40 series are you not planning on an ATX 3 PSU? If you're not, then maybe the GX-750 at £95, or the Phanteks AMP 850 for £115. These would be fine with a 3070, but not sure about a high-end 40 (since it is maybe subject to power spikes, power adapters, etc).

The 1TB SN570 is pretty good value for £75 and plenty fast enough if you're only gaming. Looks a tad out of the place with that system though.

Moving forward I'd be looking to have at least an **80 card in the build. There's a couple of 3070's kicking around on the members market now for a good price so one of them will be a good stop gap (for a few years) until the 4080 is cheaper / other things progress with cards.

I'd also plan on upgrading the CPU a few years down the line as well, or close towards the sockets end of life. AMD have stated they are planning on supporting it for some time so if they stay true to their word the machine can get a new GPU & CPU refresh 3 - 4 years down the line.
So having a decent motherboard & PSU would be beneficial now for sure.

I see what you mean re the SN570 (being blue and all!) - would the SN770 work with the above? https://www.overclockers.co.uk/wd-b...-solid-state-drive-wds100t3x0e-hd-58f-wd.html

I'd personally wait a little while to see what the independent reviews are, comparing Intel 13th gen stuff to Ryzen 7000. Especially at the low to mid ranges. Both seem pretty compelling right now but with Intel you have the option of installing Raptorlake in 12th gen boards with DDR4 making things a damn sight cheaper if you wish.

I'd want to see how both compare though.

Nice to see you around still! Hope you are keeping well.

I'd rather not wait as I'm worried that the price of things is about to go up for us here in the UK what with what is happening in the world at the moment. It's a bit of a gamble but I think imports are about to go up which means hardware is going to be more expensive in the near future so want to just go ahead with what I feel is going to be a good choice when I look back 3 years down the line and can say "I'm glad I went in early on with this one"..... could backfire still! But think it's a good compromise with a 3070 second hand.

That's a £1000 upgrade (cpu,motherboard,m memory) I would be tempted to drop £350 on a 5600, b550 and 16gb of memory.

Even cheaper second hand.

I might as well go with the Ryzen 7 mightn't I? It's not a great deal more.

In HUB's video review, Steve said that if you're dumping all that cash on the mobo/ram for a platform upgrade, then the extra for the 7700X makes sense (relative to the whole cost) and I can definitely understand that logic. Though, he also says that buying an 8 core CPU (e.g. 1700/2700/3700) has not worked out in games (from a future proofing POV) and there's not much difference between any of them (Zen 4 CPUs) right now, so eh...

Yes, Spangles darling. I'm still here, it's nice to see you around aswell. I'm still on Discord etc if you ever fancy a chat.

That's a fair point about the cost of living, I don't think you'll be disappointed by buying now and spending a bit more if you can. I'd be doing the same if I had the spare cash right now.

Yes.

Those 2 extra cores / 2 extra threads just give the cpu legs for the long term.

I went 5700X for that very reason (I also run Virtual Machines and lots of ram).

Do you need a new computer now? I don’t like the pricing of the X670 motherboards, I think that they cost an arm and a kidney.

It is a platform that will be supported for the next 3 or so years which does bring down the long term cost and increases value.

I will be waiting for the B650 ITX boards personally but I’m happy with my current rig.

Thanks for the input all.

Went with the 7700X, 32GB, Samsung 980 Pro 1TB M.2 2280 PCI-e 4.0 & Corsair RMX750 in the end.

I've been waiting for a long time to upgrade and with my current situation & existing rig, it makes sense to hop in now and have the option to upgrade later in the sockets life as well. Can hunker down for winter now & keep the house warm just with this!

@Vidar - I'll let you know whe n I finally get some time to play :)
