new router, bad DL speeds

after many years of good service of my netgear 834, i decide to buy a new router as i was looking a wireless connection as well.
i went for the DG834N, since i was always v.happy with the old 834

BUT since using the 834N. i have noticed the my DL speed has drop from 1400kbps to 320kbps.

as far as i can see all the setting are the same on both routers for adsl
and ive upgraded the firmware in the 834N to the latest ver

is it just that the 834N is worst at handling my connection than the old 834 (i should say that i live 4.5 miles from the exchange)

if that is the case are there any routers that could handle my connection even better than the 834 given me a better connection

hope this makes sense english isn't my best language

Have you tried swapping back to the old router to rule out things like contention?

yes currently using the old router.
in fact to double check i have the new router set up on the laptop and the onl router set up on my main machine so that i can have both setup screens up

swapping the telephone cord from router to router. with the old router iam always getting around the 1400kbps with the new router it around 350kbps

You mean you can download at 350kbps, or the router reports it's connected at that?

Have you updated the firmware on the DG834N as there have been several updates since it launched
