Hey guys,
More and more recently I've been getting frustrated by high-ish pings when playing online form my PC which is recieving its internet access from our home router. Now at the moment its a Belkin 54G router
and with my Room being a about 3 walls from the router I am starting to think that getting something more powerful and capable signal wise may help me out.

We have an 8Mb connection which is connecting at 7448Kbs down/488Kbs Up so that figure seems not too bad! The pings i an seeing have been ranging from 100-300ms whereas my dbrothers PC(connected straight to the router) is well below the 100ms mark.

Could it be down to the fact the router we have is not powerful enough to carry the signal strong enough to my PC and thus I see a slight degration in terms of my ping? If this is the case I have looked at one of the Belkin N routers which would provide a much greater range and a carrier rate of 300mbps which also comes with an N USB adapter! Would this in theory improve my performance in recieving the internet connection and thus improving my ping?

Cheers!

Are you connected to the router by wire or wireless?

If wireless then there will be problems going through walls. Perhaps getting a more powerful aerial for your router would help or perhaps running a wireless extender from the router closer to your room so you haven't got as many walls to receive a signal through.

In theory it should be better but at a price and with no guarantee(usb not usually prefferred for performance reasons).

Have you considered wiring straighr into your router or using Homeplug (ethernet over the mains) to connect to you existing router?

So a PCI Card may have different results than say the USB? That is something I have always been curious about! I have a spare DLink PCI wireless adapter sitting about im sure so I could give that a try.

Marc i am the wireless connection. I ran Speedtest on both PC's my brothers came up with a result of around 4300KBs Download whereas I was around 2300KBs download on the same servers. So that basically confirmed my feelings towards the networking problem.

Yeah thats right there is the option of homeplug, I may look into this, is the performance good? I suppose it is going through your existing wiring so in therory is connecting directly to the router so could be better.

There's your problem. :D

Definately sounds it :D

Well im going to pick up a couple of these tonight mate. What would you suggest speedwise for the Homehubs?

Its an 8Meg BBand connection so would I be best with the 85MBps Homeplugs or the 200MBps Homeplugs? Its to get the best possible rate for online gaming really where my connection drops out due to poor wireless performance!

you'll always going to be let down by your weakest link, your router certainly is it

for online gaming imo wireless is a no, usb (when it comes to networking) is a no no

Ok guys a small update! I bought a pair of 85ms Advent Homeplugs and my god do they work a treat! My internet connection from my PC is just a bit below my brothers now so im pleased at that and in general the speed of my internet browsing has increased due to this. I am also no longer experiencing the dreading 10-20secs of downtime! Super!

However.........

The pings are still pretty high when gaming! I have contacted BT to see if they can solve the problem by probing the line for a fault but also to ensure interleaving is off on the line as to improve my latency!

Though thanks for the homeplug advice, easy to install and at least solved one problem!
