New Router Needed

Hi all,

I'm getting lost in the world of networking and need some help. I have BT Total Broadband at the moment with a HH3 but I will be upgrading to BT Infinity when they finally cable the extra 200 metres!!

I want to get a new router as the HH3 is a bit crappy but I have no idea which one to get. Budget is around £40 unless I'd be no better off than the HH3 in this price range.

So I need a router which is OK with my current ADSL connection but then also fine when I upgrade to Infinity. I don't know if this is a consideration which even needs to be taken or whether I'm being daft.

This is the first time I've had to set up a network so I'm a complete newb.

Thanks in advance.

Fair enough.

I'll hold until the Infinity upgrade and get a new router then. What would be recommended for when I get Infinity?

The HH3 I find is poor due the following:

- I live in a 3 story house and in the master bedroom on the top floor it can struggle to hold connection
- Needs to be restarted fairly frequently due to dropping connection on a couple of devices (Laptop and iPhone)
- Some kind of compatability problem with the PS Vita (only get about 1 meg instead of 7 meg at the same time on the PC)
- Only one DMZ slot (need three due to PS3, 360 and now PSV as well)

The DMZ thing isn't a huge problem because I could spend time forwarding the ports I need manually but it is just so much easier to place a games console in the DMZ than to do it manually.

Hmm a lot of routers only have 1 DMZ, for example my WNR2000 with DD-WRT :p.

I had similar issues when I was using the HH3, the wireless is terrible and not just the signal.

Here's what I'd do. Buy a WNR2000 (v2) or DD-WRT compatible router, disable the wireless/dhcp on the HH3 and use the WNR2000v2 for routing/wireless. Then when you have Infinity, drop the HH3 altogether.

Rumour has it there is a cheap WNR2000v2 going on a popular auction site...:p
