New router

I am looking to replace my Cisco 857w router, it is overkill for what I need and to be honest I only really bought it to fiddle with a Cisco router.

I need a wireless router with built in modem that will cover a 3 storey house with a gigabit uplink to a gigabit switch.

I would also like some sort of QoS to prioritise VPN traffic during the day as my wife works from home.

I am looking to pay £100 give or take.

I have a Belkin Pre-N router. The range is fantastic.It's been replaced by the N products now but basically the same thing.

WRT54GL, and your choice of ADSL modem (or cheap ADSL router in bridge mode).

Edit: WRT150/300/350N if you want 802.11n, though support for third party firmware is still patchy with those routers.

I don't have any N devices that is not to say that I will not.

The WRT54GL is the router that supports the Tomato firmware isn't it?

In terms of a modem is there any that I should look at?

It has a whole range of choice other than just Tomato, but yeah.

It's the cool one for now at least - Sveasoft works for me (though it's non-free for continued updates), and DD-WRT is popular as well.

Cheers Tolien, so putting aside fees for the firmware which would you consider to be the "best?"

There isn't a "best". They're all pretty good, it comes down to what you want from the firmware - Tomato has a whole load of SVG graphs, but all the firmwares are stable enough.

Tomato doesn't have an SNMPd (without some hassle installing it), which was a show stopper for me. Depends what you want from it.

Well stability and QoS are top of the list and from *** I have seen from the Tomato screen shots there is a reasonable amount of logging, graphing and stats.

Cheers mate, what about modems, i have never had to buy one or look into them, any suggestions??
