New router

I'm looking for a new router for my parents house. Pretty straight forward in that it needs a/b/g compatability (not n)with good signal strength, but slightly complicated in that I want one that automatically looks (and if possible relooks on a regular basis) for which channel is clearest, as their house is surounded by houses all with wifi signals, and the current (botched by me) setup is stuck on a single channel. Some days I have seen up to 15 other networ ssid's

I don't think it's possible to scan and change channels on the fly, as you'd be forever dropping wireless signal to clients as you change from one channel to another.

Use a tool such as inSSIDer, scan the locality for networks and make yours use whatever channel is least used.

What about routers that do that on startup? At least if Mum can switch it off/on on a regular basis to get around the problem.

Depending on how many devices you have connected and the budget. Wireless n on 5Ghz might be the best option.

Its jsut a laptop or 3 (sister coming over etc) after internet access. Budget wise looking at about £50 ish if possible.

I want to avoid wireless on n to avoid all the laptops needing new hardware to keep down cost.

The only thing i can think of where it would be possible to change channel's automatically would be a router flashed with dd-wrt and then search for or write a script for it.
