Hi, just received a new Samsung F1 750gb today, i was planing on using it in an external drive bay. However when i plug the drive into the case and turn the case on the hdd does nothing, doesnt start spinning or anything. Anyone got any suggestions or similar problems? The caddy is a Vantec Nexstar 3 if that helps at all.
Thanks

First (& easy troubleshoot), connect/install to a PC mobo to make sure its working.

Indeed.

With my IcyDock enclosure I have noticed that the 750GB F1's can take ages to start, over a minute sometimes. But for some reason after that if I safely remove, power off the enclosure and turn it back on it starts up right away.

just briefly tried it in a mates computer, (i use a laptop as a main comp!) and it showed up briefly when windows booted up at the bottom saying found new hardware. But then it couldnt be seen in "My Computer" do new hdd have to be formatted in dos? I will try giving it to one of my other friends and ask him to format it for me! Thanks for quick response and will be back if more problems!

If Windows, right click the 'My Computer' icon & select 'Manage' then 'Disk Management'. Should appear there & can also format ;)

EDIT: If it appeared, means the HD is fine, maybe the enclosure's faulty (try above first though).

Yes they need to be initialised and formatted.

Start > Run diskmgmt.msc
A window should pop up otherwards right click on the drive.

hmm but my 320gb works fine. Maybe just the fact that its not formatted. Anyway will see when i get it back.

Hi, have finally got it back, and it still doesnt work! My old 320gb (A seagate barracuda 7200) works fine. But the new samsung doesnt even start to spin, with nothing plugged in but the power, however it works fine in a desktop computer. Any suggestions? I dont just want to go out and buy a new enclosure if its a waste of money!

It is the NST-360SU. Why would i return the hdd could it be a problem with that? I thought it would be fine considering it functions fine in a desktop.

not enough power?

Just a stab in the dark here, but perhaps the HDD is demanding too much power from the enclosure?

Is it a powered enclosure (own Power supply?) or a USB power ?

no its a powered enclosure, and its strange because the old hard drive said it needed .2 amps more on 5v & 12v so dont understand, hence why im a bit hesitant to buy a new case.
