What's the best drive for around £50~£75 ish for a fresh Win 7 installation?

Best refers to speed mainly, size is important to, but maybe not as much as speed..

Edit: Will I need drives with this new file system I've been reading about (Byte per Sector thing)

Samsung Spinpoint F3 1TB

If you don't need the full 1TB, you can simply create a smaller partition and use that. It's called "short stroking" but i've never done it myself!

Very fast drive though !

What a surprise, the two drives recommended are the F3 and Caviar Black. :)

Lots of threads on here, and like this one, not many definitive conclusions reached.

Reason? There isn't one.

I have had both drives and there is so little difference between the two that it seems to come down to personal preference.

I can give you a definitive conclusion mate.. Western Digital are much more reliable than Samsung when it comes to HDD's. Really they are and I speak from personal experience. Western Digital make superb drives, but it only ever takes one to fail out of the box and someone will say otherwise...

There is much truth in this, but the same could also be said for the Samsung drives.

I personally have had some trouble with Samsung F1's in the past, but I put it down to bad luck and am running a pair of F3's at the moment. So far, so good (touch wood).

I know Western Digital are awesome HDD's but Samsung... really... have they surpassed Seagate in quality?

Mate, just stay away from Hitachi HDDs. I've had two of their HDDs catastrophically fail on me. Unfortunately, most dell laptops are shipped with Hitachi HDDs.

Providing you dont go for known defect/known yield issue drives, as AbsenceJam has said, its all hocum about "X fails more than Y". Its dependant on environmentals, usage patterns, etc not the logo stuck on the outside.

I have 'killed' 3 Samsung drives recently as well. :)

Although I do think that in my case it was exceptional circumstances, which is why I don't want to condemn Samsung based on my experience.
