i just purchashed this drive, it seems rather noisey compared to 2 maxtor drives and a 7 series seagate i have. is everyone elses's like this? also is there anyway of checking if my drive is running in sata 2 mode?

Tbh, the seagates arent that silent, always when doing the seek test in hdtach my baracudda's 7.2k.10 are a lot noisier as my 2 or 3 years old wd caviar and my even older hitachi dekstar, it does tho make less noise as my maxtor diamondmax10plus.

Mine is certainly quiet. Out of interest, is there a sticker on the base of the hard drive at the centre of where the platters would be - apparently the stickered ones are quieter than non-stickered (batch/revision change). Mine is really quiet - actually one of my quietest.

Seagates are quiet to the poster above - but this mainly stems from the IDE range which used to have Acoustic Management enabled by default (well, certainly on the .7 series which is whisper quiet). They have stopped this feature from appearing in later SeaTools and SATA drives are generally noisier from them than their IDE drives.
