New Set up vs Existing Rig Upgrade

In raster (i.e. no ray tracing) the 7900 GRE would easily beat a 4070, they're more similar to a 4070 Super.
alright... then seems my "min" of 4080 / 7900 XT is starting around €680. Thats a pretty huge hit I think - GRE is around €550... big difference, but still a lot for it I feel.

Hmm, I agree, it isn't cheap! Is there a possibility you could hang on until the new cards release?

yeah sure - I dont really want to, but thats another point :D I had my mindset that I would do €600 max, but thats looking like it wont be possible currently

I'm hopeful that for 600 euro you could buy something nice(r than what we have) when they're out, but obviously that's not guaranteed.

Hello all - hope everyones doing well!

I have come back to this topic as, with the recent releases of GPUS, I am hopeful that there might now be a way forward for me here. I would love some suggestions on what I can / could now do with my current set up as I would love to give it a boost. my curent set up is now as following (based on the upgrades that were suggested last year to me)....

  • Gigabyte X570 Aorus Ultra AMD X570 So.AM4 Dual Channel DDR ATX Retail
  • Ryzen 7 5700XCD 8-Core
  • 8GB Gigabyte Radeon RX 5700XT AORUS-8GD, GDDR6
  • be quiet! Shadow Rock 3
  • 16GB (2x 8192MB) Patriot Viper Steel DDR4-4400 + Patriot Viper Steel DDR4 32GB (2 x 16GB) (so 48Gigs in total)
  • 1000GB WD Black SN750 Gaming M.2 2280
  • 850 Watt Corsair TX-M Series TX850M Modular 80+ Gold

Thank you in advance for any suggestions. I am still worried that my motherboard might now not be up to scratch for any new GPU, but please let me know.

GPU upgrade is on the cards, budget ?

Remind us of resolution and hz you gaming at .
Budget wise - if its just the GPU, I would be ok at the 600-700 price point if it would really give me a boost. If I would need to do multiple things (MB, Cpu etc...) then I am not sure if would be better to then sell everything and build new.

I do have a 4k monitor (Gigabyte M32UC 80cm (31.5") 4K) - display settings state 3840 x 2160

Thanks for the response!

@LankyBM

9070 XT comes to mind really, but just over budget. 9070 would be in budget...def over previous gen with fsr4 and much much improved ray trace ability...but seeing as you have 4k screen, I'd save a bit and get the xt...and you want a 16gb, esp at 4k for the textures...5070ti would be nvidia equivalent..slightly faster but more expensive again

4k is either the 9070xt or 5070ti, personally would take the 5070ti with better upscaling tech DLSS and ray tracing performance. AMD has FSR 4.0

Sorry for a stupid question - I would be able to use both variants with my current cpu and MB? For some reason, I have had the presumption that Nvidia cards were a no go for me.....

and just did a search, seems like the XT would in and around the budget which i could justify. Thank you for the feedback!

For a general question here -with the new GPU, can I simply just replace the older one and carry on as normal? Or would there be some potential MB upgrades required. I ask, as when I did the upgrade of the CPU I had a nightmare day trying to get the BIOS working without the pc just switching off after 30 seconds. I managed to find a "stable" version, but it was far from the latest one that was availiable.

You can use any card with your CPU.

Drivers best to uninstall the old ones and download the latest

£650 7950xt.

You can get a 5070ti for £720 ATM

i see you're running an rc5700XT card at mo..is that using older software or the adrenalin...just asking as switching between a 7800xt and a 9070xt I didn't have to do anything, it just recognised the new card and that was it
otherwise, seeing as you're on amd already, I'd just download the adrenalin and go from there

pretty straightforward. i had to disable the built in gpu on the 7800x3d i had as the software was picking them both up, bu you wont have that problem with the 5700x3d

and you can gain a bit more performance by undervolting the card, which is SOoooo simple to do in e software

Yeah I have adrenaline currently, but not really sure I have ever noticed anything good from it. It certainly didnt help me with the BIOS issues I had - but hopefully that wont be an issue with the new Card.

Thank you (and everyone), this has been a great help.

Just to check - if its a straight toss up between the 9070 xt and the 5070 ti, is there a winner? If I pull the plug, then I would like to get the best that I possibly could right now

Yes there both great options but at 4k the ti has better upscaling . But roughly costing 10% More than the xt.

This review sums it up well.

nvidia is a few % faster overall, but it switches depending on the game as well...If using for productivity, get the nvidia for the cuda cores...for gaming I don't think there's much in it..nvidia slightly ahead in ray tracing, but amd can do it now, and it isn't bad. I switched from nvidia to amd for the 1st time with the 9070xt, and ,touch wood, it's been great..massive leap from my 3070ti at 4k for me, and play cyberpunk and indy jones with raytracing (not full path tracing mind you)..for me it was a no brainer..at time i got my 9070xt nitro+ for £650 equivalent....cheapest 5070ti at time here was £870...that's dropped to £740 for the palit card(which i think is ugly), other wise the zotac is £785 where i am....so I'd still plum for a 9070xt as i can still get those here for £650...don't think the 5070ti is worth a £100 premium for me

so depends what the price difference is for you

below is HU review of the 9070xt, and as the 5070ti came out earlier they're directly comparing...their 18game 4k av had the 5070ti(15min12sec) 75 fps 1% lows 59, the 9070xt 74fps with 1% lows 60
at 4k it widenned to 86 vs 68 in 1440p..there are still some games that don't like the amd card...for example they had indy at 53 fps with the 5070ti vs 17 for the amd card...now i know I've played that game at 4k with mid raytracing..got a screenshot somewhere..now i was def playing that at 4k with some raytracing at itwas fine..
the new dlss is better with the 5000 series gpus compared to the 4000 series...fsr4 sits somewhere between the 2...I've not seen 5000 series, but had a 3070ti which used the older version, and that was fine, and used fsr4 which is great also..so i think upscaling is less of a factor now...dlss is on more games than fsr4, but think that will change with time...also a program called optiscaler you can use that can insert fsr4 on games that have dlss
