new skynet challenge

Damien is my recruit lol not a lot of power but he should be on 24/7 till the end. Will hopefully having a 4770k joining tomorrow just waiting on a reply but reckon he'll be in.

Code:
Team Today Yesterday 2 Days Ago
OcUK - Overclockers UK 	1,037,140 	936,454 	915,391
Crunching@EVGA 	        811,943 	631,775 	594,897

Wow not looking good guys!
21k OcuK 2/7 ago => 1/7 ago
37k EVGA 2/7 ago => 1/7 ago

101k OcuK yesterday => today
180k EVGA yesterday => today :eek:

Actually that is healthy.

We were catching / overhauling at over 300k per day. Evga have awoken, but a little too late and added cores, their output has increased, but so has ours. We have still been pulling away and widening the gap at 200k per day.

The lead is slender, and as we showed in catching a gap of what must have been over a million in only a few days, vulnerable. We mustn't rest on our laurels as there is still a few days left.

Many of the cores added today by both teams won't yet be up to full speed. Indeed the amount of completed WUs awaiting validation by someone else is ever increasing (and will only worsen as more PCs are added, perhaps with lengthy queues so stashing should be discouraged). It's too early to say who has the longer term upper hand, we have the advantage now, and must hold onto it.

Desperate times, with some trepidation I've added my ULV notebook with a 1.2GHz dual core celeron from 2009. The poor thing won't know what's hit it (I've taken out the battery to try to help cooling..), shame the POGS server probably won't even notice it :p

Just a theory but would this work?

Found a vps which uses two 5650's and the boinic software seems to work on linux so could I rent one of these and add 24 threads for the remainder of the challange?

I've added my general use/server rig (i7 950) which I normally don't use for DC projects. That's another 8 cores but only when the PC is idle. Every little helps.

If the 5650's you refer to are gpus then they can't be used for pogs.

As an aside, I would just like to thank Brutal Biff for his comment today regarding the use of broccoli. I have not laughed so hard for so long having read that message. Apologies to the OP of the thread who is having the problem but BB's words will stay with me till I die.

Sorry I should have been more specific. Two Xeon X5650's so 12 cores 24 threads total.

Okay no worries, my ignorance on Xeon's.
I personally wouldn't go as far as that, if we win we win, if we come 2nd we come 2nd, c'est la vie. I'm here for the fun and helping science...

...unless it's a really cheap deal :D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D

£4.40 for a month lol. Wouldn't of asked if it was expensive, I've got quite a competitive nature though.

At full pelt they would cost more in electricity than that let alone getting a ROI :eek:

I might as well just rent at those rates as pay my own electric bills :mad:

Did seem too good to be true but here's the description.

Special KVM Plans - Classic
> 12 vCPU Cores @ 2.67Ghz ea. > 110GB RAID 10 Storage > 2048MB (2GB) DDR3 RAM > 5000GB Monthly Bandwidth > 1Gbit Port Uplink > 3 IPv4 Addresses

Was just a thought as I'd be willing to throw £10 at it to get 48 threads added to the team. Maybe they are just pricing thinking it would be at idle most of the time or you don't get full use of the CPU's

Having looked I'd be concerned about what was being offered and what you would get, for example responses like this to potential users...

Hi, No you can't use all 12 vCPUs, however you can use a 'fair share'.

So for the money you can pay for 12 but you can't use 12, what can you use !

Yeah had my doubts for that price would have been nice though. Hopefully I'll have a dual x5650 rig set up for next time.

Most vCPU systems are contended - you never get 100% of a core for very long and if you try, you usually get kicked pretty quickly.

If anyone is thinking of adding new cores, now is the time to do it. Next week, pending credit will gradually wipe out any benefit, though if enough of us do it we might validate each others work. :)

Thanks for clearing that up. Would it be worth starting a call to action thread in maybe the CPU section or similar to try and get more people on board? I'm sure there are people on the forum who would be willing to spare their pc's for a week for this who don't visit this part of the forum.

I wouldn't make unsolicited threads anywhere else on this board. It's been done in the past and hasn't gone down well. By all means join in other threads with on topic comments and perhaps have links to the DC forum areas or even this thread. But don't spam.

It's also not necessary to start renting servers elsewhere. I'd also suggest that is a little against the spirit of things. OK many of us as dedicated crunchers do go out of our way to have kit that has good returns against power use and cost. But originally this was all supposed to be about making use of unused resources in your PC when it was on, not running kit specially for the task. For the majority of us joining in here the fun is in trying to squeeze the last bit out the kit we have available, and for those who want to risk it, using stuff that might not really be designed to handle full loads 24/7.

Will chuck my 2700K on the pile tomorrow. :)

Would a pair of Xeon E5430's help at all? They are a bit old now...

anything that will run skynet will help, people are even using there phones!!! :eek:

looks to me like evga are now catching up & I think they'll now destroy us lol, they've asked folders to help them out. if only LOUDBOB was still around with his monster 4p set ups! & biffa still had he's.
