Hi
At the moment I have onboard sound, and some Logitech 2.1s (http://www.techneek.co.uk/reviews/Logitech-Z-3-/13.html these ones)

Is it worth me getting a propper sound card? I want to get some new speakers, between 100-300quid ish. Is it worthi t? what would you recommend?

Onboard sound is bad for games, it is actually emulated. Some of the cpu time is used to process the sound effects. Soundcards do the processing on a chip on card.

Get a sound card such as an audigy 4 or the one above. Make sure you turn your onboard sound off in the bios.

Above looks good but it's worth asking what you use your PC for. If you game then X-Fi is the card of choice. If you never game then other card may provide better sound.
Same goes for speakers. Do you watch movies on your PC? If yes then 5.1s are great. If it's just music then there are other, better sounding, 2 speaker options :)

The only game is WoW so don't really care about sound in games.
I listen to a LOT of music though, so it is only for music. So i only want a 2.1 system tbh. not even got room for a 5.1/7.1 tbh

A stereo amp and bookshelf speakers should definitely be on your list as well as a good soundcard which can give phono analogue output. M-Audio do some good ones.

You're talking a different language to me. I know what 2.1's etc are. but that is about it.

Why would I need an amp, if i am running it through a computer with computer speakers??...

A proper hi-fi amp and book shelf speakers have FAR superior sound than almost any PC speakers every made, full stop. Thats why ;)

With your budget you'd be far better looking for a decent second hand hi fi amp and speakers, and a better sound card.

I moved to my current setup from some Creative Itrigue 5.1s, and a year or two back, they were considered one of the best pc speaker setups you could get for under £200...my current hi-fi 2 speaker setup beats it resoundly.

I have the logitech surround and to be honest i find it perfect for music altho it is connected with a bad soundcard..and if ** going to go for some bass i recomand logitech z-5500

I agree, read the guides here as to recommended hi-fi separates setups. Providing you have the space to put the amp (which you should) you won't ever regret making the change :)

So I should get a new sound card, a propper amp, and some non pc speakers?
How much is this going to cost, for a nice sounding thing?

About £50 - £60 for the soundcard, £80 - £180 for an amp, £100 - £200 for speakers.

That's all brand new budget gear.
Amps are fairly reliable second-hand, speakers less so.

£230 isn't bad for a decent budget hi-fi that will kick the ass of 'PC speakers'.
