Hey

I'm looking into getting a new sound card soon and then an amp / speakers later on in the year. I currently run a Xonar DX but looking for a little upgrade, either the D2X or possibly the Essence STX / ST. Only problem is, I'm a bit of a newb when it comes to Audio.

I've not got a huge budget, so something along the lines of the Cambridge A1 amp that is recommended by so many here and a set of £80 speakers will probably be on the cards after I move house this year.

I'll break it down into questions rather than just a wall of text.

Current setup is: Xonar DX > Switch > Speakers & Headphones

1) Going from a DX to D2X would be a minimal difference I presume? Would it really be worth it? I can just about afford an Essence STX if it's really that good

2) If I had a DX / D2X and the amp setup, the headphones would just go directly into the soundcard ignoring the amp setup? The STX has a headphone amp, so would it sound better?

3) My main concern at the moment is, if I splashed out and went for the STX, could I have my current setup working? I say this because the back panels are different (DX > STX).
Right now my mic is the top jack (PIC) and my speaker / headphone splitter in the 2nd top jack.
The back panel of the STX is a little different (PIC), how would I go about setting it up?

Essence has separate headphone and speaker connections, so no need for a switch. If you have a DX, I wouldn't bother going for a D2X. Either stick with the DX, or get an Essence.

Yay, a reply, thx Marsman :).

I see the Headphone and Line In jacks on the pic I linked, would I just put the mic in the SPDIF?
