Hi Guys :)

What speakers would you recommend for £200?

I will be using them exclusively with my PC through a Asus Xonar DG and will be using them for gaming and music. My room is approximately 6x5 meters.

Not bothered about the design or the size, just want something that will sound good both at normal volume and occasionally turned up :p

Thanks,
Oliver

I wouldn't want to pay 150 for the Aego's.

I recently bought some for a friend for 120 at OCUK, and was VERY impressed with them really.

I use the SP2500's myself, but I'm in two minds which I'd take.
At 150 versus 184, I'd probably go SP2500's.

At 120, it'd be the Aego's.

I use an Amptastic TA2020 based amp and a set of Eltax monitor III bookshef speakers.

My setup is no longer available as they've released sucessors but there are some very good equivelants.

Difficult choice, found a review for the Aego at WhatHifi which has put me off a little despite other review being very good. Would it be worth buying for £130 found a set on fleabay?

Sounds good, do you know what kind of setup I would get for my budget, is it more expensive buying separately?

I wouldn't buy the Aego's at £150. £130 is better, but if they are used, then that's too much. They used to cost £90 around 2008, so an extra £60 is too expensive for what they are, hence What Hi-Fi's three star rating. Corsair SP2500 is a better buy, unless you can get the Aego's new for a lower price.

A Topping TP-20 costs ~£55 or the Amptastic Mini-1 (the new version of what I have) costs ~£100. Make sure it comes with a power supply! You will need some half decent speaker cable too.

I'm not up to date on current bookshelf speakers so I am not best placed to advise. £100-150 should get you a good set (the Tannoy Mercury V1i and the Wharfedale Diamond 9.1 seem to be mentioned a lot) . There are a few Eltax Monitor III (what I use) on ebay for small money.

It's worth noting that the bass from this type setup is good but don't expect it to rumble your house like something with a sub would. I would expect a controled, clear and well rounded sound from it.

will have to recommended

M audio BX5A Deluxe

;-)

These. :D

I had the Aego's for around 3 years. Great speakers when they at the price I bought them new (£89). There is no way I paid the price they go for now though. Bought the BX5a around 6 months ago. Really happy with them. Bass isn't the deepest but what's there is tight and musical. Mid range is head and shoulders above the Aego's though.

Thanks for all the suggestions guys. I think the stereo speakers and amp will be the best choice for me.

A bit concerned about the bass though, is there anyway to wire one up to stereo speakers if I decide it isn't enough?

Would a Pioneer A-10-K 50w be suffice for a pair of WHARFEDALE DIAMOND 9.1's? Would using a method like -THIS- enable me to add a subwoofer to it?

The amp will drive the 9.1s just fine.

The wiring of the sub would depend on what sub you get. For passive subs it sould be OK as long as it has enough speaker inputs on the back of the sub (2 pairs of 2). This method is basically wiring the sub in parallel with the exisiting speakers. However some subs are active, this means that they have an amp built in and just require a line in from your amp or sound card.

If there is a Richer Sounds near you go into their showroom and get them to wire up some speakers to an amp to give you an idea of bass levels. The sales team aren't usually pushy and it should give you a good idea of what to expect.

Are you planning on having the 9.1's on your desk? They will take up a fair amount of space. They will also give you plenty of bass you will be sat pretty close to them.

You can get active subs with speaker binding posts. They're high resistance so you can still wire in parallel with speakers. Which is how i run my Wharfedale 9.1s and Wharfedale Powercube 10+

the 9.1s are quite big and can take up some space, but they're great speakers.

I stand corrected.

Get a cheap NAD amp and some B&W or Dynaudio speakers from ebay. Dynaudio will sound better if you are right infront of them, but also more expensive.

NAD 315/316 Bee + Dynaudio Audience or B&W 601 s3

Or Dynaudio powered monitors

(Used)

Either of those will completely pwn something like wharfedale 9.1 etc.

Bought mine in 2002 for £59.99 Would love to pick up another pair if i ever see them. Have them plugged into a Yamaha Audio Receiver which was an Ebay special that's also pretty old.
