Been meaning to treat myself to a new system this Chrimbo but been waiting for the new 8800GT and GTS to come out. £1000 budget for a full system. Have I missed anything? or does anyone have any alternative suggestions?

Thanks

J

Cheers for the comment. I was under the impression this cooler didn't need one. Have you got any suggestions for a decent, quiet fan?

Cheers for the comment. I was under the impression this cooler didn't need one.

You can run it fanless, however you should keep an eye on the temperatures, at least in the beginning although that is a good idea anyway and I wouldn't suggest any overclocking if you do.

Other than that it looks fine aside from the fact I might pick a cheaper 8800GT if any are in stock since it will perform just as well.

Yeah, ideally I would have gone for a Zotac 8800GT AMP edition but they don't seem to be in stock anywhere. Is there much of a difference between the amp edition and the standard?

Sorry, forgot that the 8800GTS was released today, more stream processors and should be faster overall so just go with that because that is a decent price.

If asking between 8800GT cards then there isn't a huge amount of difference that I know of, I think the Zotac comes with a larger fan/cooler as standard and the Ram is clocked higher but it shouldn't be too hard to overclock a standard 8800GT to the same sort of speeds with a little bit of luck. :)

Thanks for the advice. I have done a bit of searching and have found a couple of possible graphics card candidates. It's down to an Asus 8800GT and a Zotac 8800GTS.

The GTS is £45 more than the GT. Would this extra performance be worth the extra money?

A 20" or 22" monitor is about the tipping point for me, if you were getting a smaller monitor then I'd say possibly not but at that level I'd go for it provided you can afford it and I definitely would with a 24" or larger monitor.

I can probably stretch to the GTS. I just find it psychologically difficult to spend as much money on a graphics card as I would on a PS3!!
