Hey Peeps,

My father in law is upgrading his SSD from a 120gb to a 500gb, What i need to know(and what he wants to do) is transfer the old drive to the new drive(IE not reinstall windows with all drivers/applications etc) Any ideas what tool to use, Something idiot proof and easy to use. All the best and look forward to the responses.
Cheers

Acronis True Image works just fine... or if it's a Samsung SSD that you are buying, then it comes with it's own cloning software (and this works just fine as well). Loads of other cloning tools out there as well (macrium reflect comes to mind).

Question... why not keep your current SSD (if it's still half decent) and just add another drive for your data (either another SSD, or a decent mechanical HD)? You can for instance quite easily re-direct things like documents/pictures/music etc. to another drive other than the one your C: drive is on. Doing it this way means that should the drive that your OS is on fail, then all you need to do is re-build this and your data is safe. Statistically I suspect it's the drive that your OS is on that is more likely to fail (highest I/O etc.). Just had the SSD that my OS was on fail and all I had to do was pull old SSD out, replace with new one and use the bootable rescue disk from Acronis True Image to recover the last drive image I had back to the new drive (and no data lost, as this is all on other drives). Almost zero down time and no data lost. Though obviously every one has their proffered storage setup.

Good luck.

His 120gb drive is full of the OS and applications and not much else. I checked it the other day and its he was down to his last 100mb! Literally full. I will check out Acronis though, Cheers for the info tho.
